The Search For The Private Ms Key
« on: September 29, 2003, 01:15:00 PM »

Now everyone knows that nice little M$ key is locked up somewhere safe.  Now think of what the community would be able to do with it.  It would eliminate the need for any hack at all - think of popping an Evo-X cd into a virgin box or a burned game.  Now, here's the problem.  This key is LONG, and we don't have it.  So how about we find it?

Large encryption codes have been cracked before using this method (For those of you who don't know what method I'm speaking of: A distributed computing project involves a server and a large number of clients.  The server gives out small pieces of work to each client, then the client sends back the results.  With several hundred or even thousand computers, the amount of power is enormous).

I don't know how possible it is, but I'm sure everyone in the community would use the client.  Let's see if we can do it!

P.S. If I'm way off base and this can't be done then just give me a firm slap across the face  beerchug.gif

This was already attempted once, called the Neo Project -- the central servers were shut down by MSFT's legal team.  You can still find the executables for both PC and Xbox at the usual sources, although it's not much good without a central work server.

No, he didn't. If he did, we wouldn't need modchips.

well, bunnie found a mountain of stuff that he wont share because of legal issues and such, but to speculate on what that is......who knows.  Really doubt it was THE key.

I'm breaking into MS headquarters tonight . . . I'm doing so because I hear that they make really good coffee. I suppose that I could steal the code for you.

EDIT: the code is three hundred digits long: 123456789101112131415161718192021222324252627282930 and so on. Continue the pattern, and you will get the code.

This project would be very interesting to find, but I am going to stress, I doubt it is simply a key.  I beleive it is implemented into the actual factory-pressed cd, not the XBE.  Hence, old games without the media check, still need the mod chip (such as Halo, etc.).  If it was an xbe signed, it would not need the chip to run.

Therefore:

* We cannot create our own XBEs without MS's private key

Wrong, we can make our own XBEs. Look at OpenXDK. The problem is, we can't make a signed XBE.

Well he sounded pretty confident, let him give it a shot smile.gif

Maybe in a decade from now the numbers will be done crunching.

I think what bunnie found was the RC4 key used to encrypt the BIOS on V 1.0 Xboxs (In fact, it is, I've got the book in front of me).

RC4 is a much weaker encryption than what games are signed with, which is rumored to be a 2048 bit public/private key system.

No, MS did not 'shut down the servers', its simply that the people funding the project lost interest, and as a result - no more project.  The fact that all 404 errors were directed to the MS legal dept. page was simply a little joke.
And did you even think before posting?  What exactly do you think MS did?  Hacked into the webserver, and redirected it to MS.com? I mean, really.
