you'll need a copy of your friend's eeprom in order to unlock the hard drive before you can relock it and use it.

ok this for the first poster, this should help the second(third) poster.

1.What you need is to get the EEPROM Keyof the HD you received from your friend, so that you can unlock, and change it.

2.Then you need the EEPROM Keyof the Xbox you are trying to place it in.

3.After you get the Xbox's(The one where its going), use that EEPROM Key, unlock the given HD and replace the EEPROM key it has with the one from the Xbox, then lock it.
MAKE SURE YOU GET THE ABOVE RIGHT, KEEP THE EEPROM SAFE/RIGHT SO YOU CAN ALWAYS UNLOCK IT, IF NEEDED

Now the way this works is, since the HD that your friend gave you is using the same EEPROM key as the Xbox you are putting it in, it should be able to open/unlock it, when you start your Xbox.

For the second(third) poster

The HD you are putting in needs the same EEPROM key as the Xbox you are putting it in, so that it can be opened/unlocked at start up by the Xbox.

This info is provided as is, no warranty is provided, specially as you are doing something already in violation of MS's Xbox warranty.

Would'nt he need the eeprom from the xbox the hdd came from to unlock drive or disable the security on the drive. Then use the eeprom from the box he's putting the drive into to lock the drive?

I just reread the above post. This is pretty much what he's saying. Just looks a little confusing here:
"After you get the Xbox's(The one where its going), use that EEPROM Key, unlock the given HD and replace the EEPROM key it has with the one from the Xbox, then lock it."

Sorry I did'nt re-read it after I did wrote it.

Basicly what you need to acomplish is, replace the EEPROM of the HD you was given, with the one from the Xbox you are putting it in.

Well ive finally had the time to try and switch the modded HD to an unmodded xbox. like before ive been having the problem unlocking the harddrive. now im able to unlock the HD not using unlockhd through linux, but using atapwd from the dos mode.and disable locking with master password using XBOXSCENE. now ive used every option to try to lock it again and i get the flashing green and red light. i have the correct eeprom. when i try to lock it through linux it says under the status of the HD that its not lock. try to lock it through DOS using atapwd and it shows that is locked. anyone got any advice???

correct me if i'm wrong... but i thought DISABLING was different than UNLOCKING... so... wouldnt you have to re-ENABLE locking to be able to lock it??

Disable locking just means it won't automatically lock when the power is turned off.

You can lock again any time you want.

So:

Unlock a HDD : Allows you to access the HDD. When you turn off the power, the hdd is locked again. On next reboot (after power down) you'll need to unlock again.

Unlocking and disable locking your HDD : Allows you to access the HDD. When you turn off the power, the HDD remains unlocked. You don't need to unlock again after reboot (after powerdown)

Locking the hdd is always possible, as long as the hdd itself is 'lockable', which can be checked here (no guarantees) : http://xboxdrives.x-pec.com/

Reminder : a HDD should always be locked with the correct key when used in a softmodded XBox.

And the conclusion or short answer : you never have to (re)-enable locking. (and if the drive ever has been locked, it can be locked again of course)

I do that, im able to lock it through atapwd. I connect everything again and i get a service error with no number and flash red and green lights. Also the password to lock it through lockhd or hdlock in the dos program is XBOXSCENE correct?? cause thats what ive been putting. using unlockx to give me the status it shows lock but it needs to be rebooted something like that. so i turn it off connect it and same problem. service error with no number and flashing red and green lights

No the password isn't 'xboxscene', that's the masterpassword. Please read the xboxhdm tutorial for info on that.

OK, here goes, it's all in the "xboxhdm for noobs" tutorial, but this is the short version. This is one way to (un)lock your drive. There are of course more ways. I think this is the safest way. Please don't add comments like "it can be done without a floppy", just want to provide a step-by-step that's easy to follow and has an extra option (diskette) in case a mistake is made.

This mini tutorial will only deal with locking and unlocking! (not softmodding/replacing or updating software etc etc)

NEEDED:

- Hard disk.
- The Eeprom.bin file(s)
*** To unlock : the Eeprom.bin file from the XBox the hdd is coming from, to lock: the Eeprom.bin file of the xbox the hdd is going to. So, if if you're planning to transfer a HDD from one xbox to another, you need 2 Eeprom.bin files.***
- XBoxhdm
- A CDR(W)
- A CD/DVD burner
- A Diskette

To unlock:
- Put the Eeprom.bin file from the Xbox the HDD is from in the correct folder of xboxhdm. (..\linux\eeprom)
- start: make-iso-win.bat, this wil generate an .iso file
- Burn this image to a CDR/CDRW (use the "burn image" option (Nero, recorder tab) or similar, don't just put the file on a disc.
- Make sure the jumper setting on your HDD is set to Cable Select (CS) or Master (M)
- Hook up the HDD to IDE1
- Hook up your CD or DVD drive to IDE2
- Reboot your PC with the just burned disc in CD/DVD player
- Choose boot option 1 or 2 (VGA or Text)
- Type : xboxhd, follow onscreen instuctions (confirmation of hdd)
- Choose Option 6
- Choose option 7
- Choose option 8 when done.
- Get CDR from drive, keep floppy in drive, reboot
- Type 'unlockhd' (NOT : hdunlock!)
- Done
(You can check if the disk is unlocked by typing 'unlockx')

To lock:
- Put the Eeprom.bin file from the Xbox the HDD is going to be used in in the correct folder of xboxhdm.
- Type 'lockhd' (NOT : hdlock!)
- Done
(You can check if the disk is locked by typing 'unlockx)

Disk won't lock? Check here if the disk is lockable anyway (yes, you should do this before you start : http://xboxdrives.x-pec.com/

If you need a more indepth tutorial or pics : read the original by Kingroach, which can be found here : http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=244043
