Try holding the L trigger and UP on the d-pad.. seems to work that way with the S controllers (for some reason).

I've tried pressing start with my standard controller and nothing happened for me either.

Instead, press UP on the pad when it says X-select on the screen.  You may want to press it several times.

Try both triggers.

M$' routines do not allow an app to see the gamepad buttons change until it comes up, thus, if you are hoilding anything BEFORE the "X-Select 0.6" comes up, it won't see it.

It gives you a few moments, or two gamepad actions before deciding to continue.
