Is It Possible To Make A Zip/dvd Multi Menu
« on: April 13, 2003, 03:25:00 PM »

Ugh.

This wouldn't really save much, and it would take FOREVER to load a game.

It could be done with my menu app, MXM, if I added it... but I'm not terribly convinced it would be worthwhile.

I am, however, planning on adding a feature to install games from the DVD compilation to the HD.

indeed, it would take a good 2minutes to run a 200 - 400mb game, due to the fact, it would have to make the processor work harder, to decode, and make sure all the crcs (cyclic redundancy checks) are correct.

If there is problem with the unpacking program, Y not use a x86 emulator with a menu wink.gif

Um, no.

Really, when a couple of us, experienced programmers on the Xbox, tell you it's impractical, try and keep an open mind that we just might know a thing or two.

Unzipping is not the problem per se, it's the ungodly LONG time to unzip even the smaller games. The DVD drive is slow, and you are writing to the hard drive (which is a much slower operation than reading)... plus there's the issue of fragmentation (some worry about) and eventual cleanup (no app is around to delete the app after the user is done playing it - best solution is to keep a single temp directory, but then you have to add the time to DELETE the old game before loading the new game)

You obviously do not want to hear this, but Videogamebuyer14 is exactly right when he tells you your loading time will be, at a MINIMUM, in the order of several minutes - and for what? To save a few hundred megabytes off of a DVD-R?

It ain't happening.

what about some kind of software like Daemon-Tools which would mount a .iso game image from a dvd or hard drive? create something like a T: drive as in "temporary" smile.gif with the iso content

im pretty sure that this is more do-able than the previous idea

sounds like something that would require multi-tasking to me
