Mech Assault
Quantum Redshift

I'm going to do about 10 more, create a rar and stick 'em in a.b.c.i.xbox A central site would be great, maybe the skins site will support this as a download type?

Can someone explain how to convert MOV clips into WMV using the latest Windows Media Encoder?  (v9)

I know that a tutorial exists for an older version of the encoder (7.1) but I was just wondering what the best settings were when doing a conversion with the latest encoder.

Thanks!

Depends on what you are looking to target...

If it's the Xbox Media Player, WM9 is fine (just mentioning this because WM9 is **NOT** compatible with MXM), since XBMP has special codec for handling the newer format.

Otherwise, WM7.1 or even better WM8 is the real choice for preview videos.

&#$(*#@$@#$!!!!

I just finished my 12th one...all w/WME9.

Shite...

Sorry about that.... I just realized I did not spell that fact out in the MXMReadMe.txt file.

I will detail that in the new documentation.

My problem was that for developers, it's a given... Windows Media 8 is pretty well spelled out in the WMV support in the XDK. I failed to realize that this may not have been common knowledge for users out there (though I have mentioned it many, many times in the past in various threads on this board)

Ok...so I did a dozen or so using WM9.  That didn't pan out.  Spent yesterday doing the same dozen w/WM8.  I use the command
CODE
wm8eutil –input myfile.avi –output myfile.wmv -v_mode 3 -v_bitrate 1000000
to encode w/WM8 and those files apparently don't work.  Not only do they not play but they lockup MXM entirely.

Am I doing something odd..?

I'll take a quick look when I get home. I use a specific batch file to make all my videos.

If you are searching for a better way to edit, convert, encode wmv8 movies for MXM, take a serious look at Sonic Foundry Vegas Video 4.  A professional video editing program that encompassess the MXM preview movie process from start to finish.

My sources for movies were IGN and my Xbox (using DV Cam analog to digital pass thru).  For IGN quicktime movies, simply import to Vegas.  You can then edit them to your heart's desire.  For movies that IGN couldn't offer, I captured with my DV Cam and imported straight into Vegas.   Again, easily editable since in native DV format.

Once you have a nice edit, simply tell Vegas to encode to WMV8.  I had the best results using clips of 30 seconds or less.  I encoded them at 768kbps at 320x240 resolution.  All movies came at or under 3 megabytes.  All movies worked with MXM.

Hope this helps.

By the way, to add to the list, I've done MotoGP, NHL 2003, TOCA, Soul Calibur 2, Sims, State of Emergency and a few others I forgot.

smile.gif version of MXM. Lots of good stuff. Generator is running on it in "compatibility mode" so to speak (it supports loading old skins, as well as combined skin definitions).

I think you'll like some of the new goodies available.

Thanks for the Vegas tip Strong.  Vegas really did make encoding/editing the files a breeze.  I still don't know why actually encoding them via the WM8 command line utility produces unusable files though.  It makes for a nasty lockup too - freezes MXM entirely and even IGR doesn't reset the box (running in the Xecuter bios not from Evox) only a hard reset fixes it.

Cheers,

Sticky (who also has some skin ideas up his sleeves...pulling out all my old Artbeats Cds...)
