Problem With Mxm0.9e Music
« on: January 13, 2003, 09:29:00 PM »

I can't figure out how to get music to play when the menu is displayed on the screen.  I don't have any videos, just a static background and screen shots.  I've tried placing the MUSIC section in the MXM.xml file, the MXM_Skin.xml file and both of them.  I've tried setting just a single file to play with the <Background> key, a directory to play with the <Directory> key and even a global sound track.  No matter what I try, I never get any music.  The menu select and launch sounds work ok though.  Is there anything special I need to do to get the music to work?  I've followed the instructions in the readme file as best I can.  I've got games and screen shots to work fine.

Here is my <Music> section in case that may help:

<Music>
<UseMusic>on</UseMusic>
<Directory>e:\apps\mxm\music</Directory>
<Background>e:\apps\mxm\music\theme.wma</Background>
<Global>on</Global>
<Random>off</Random>
</Music>

Thanks for anyone's help,

Craiz

I'll try and look into it tomorrow....

I'm beat right now, after spending an hour on the bike (plus I'm taking a day or two before getting back into the code after the latest release)

Try 0.9f, though... I fiddled around with the soudntrack code a little bit so something might have changed for your situation.

I'm working on getting 9f, hoping that will fix my problem.  I looked through some of the code and noticed some code in musicmanager.cpp regarding sound tracks.  At that point I had not ripped any music to my hard drive using the MS dashboard.  I had hoped that perhaps because there was no sound tracks that the music manager failed on intialization.  Anyway, I created a sound track and tried loading MXM again, but still the same result.

Thanks for the help, great menu by the way.

Yes, I need to rip the soundtrack stuff apart a bit.... I did notice a problem when I didn't have any tracks on my "virgin" Xbox.

Part of the problem is that much of the code 'evolved' as versions progressed. I've revisited a few things, but I think a major overhaul of some sections of code will be required before I get to 1.0 smile.gif

As it is, I'm going to retrofit X-Marbles (my game) with a lot of the code I developed for MXM.

I figured out what was going on.  The problem was that I had a title delay of 0 to skip the displaying of a title.  Apparently this also caused the sound to get skipped as well.  I discovered this by giving up on the sound and moving on to getting a video to play as an intro.  I loaded it and BAM! the sound I was trying to get playing for the menu started playing for the video.

Is it possible to play the sound to a title video?  I suppose I could extract the audio from the video and set it as a sound file to play.  But that wouldn't quite work right because if I press a button to skip the video, the sound continues. Hmmm... you must be swamped with so many people wanting mxm to work just a little different.  I guess that's the price for making such a cool and needed app.

EDIT-

Yes I know I need to get 0.9f, I'm still working on it.  smile.gif

When the next "level" of skinning gets implemented, I'm planing on a switch to allow video sound to play in the background with the other sounds and music.

This way, for example in the LCARS, you can have Star Trekky background sounds occasionally pop in as the meters rise and fall.

In 0.9f, I think I fixed the problem you saw, when I moved to specifically allow the "removal" of the title screen using a delay of 0.
