Project Dreamix - Pvr Features?
« Reply #15 on: January 06, 2003, 02:05:00 PM »

The new xbox 1.5 is rumoured to have PVR anyways, why not just wait?

This project seems like it could work, but to limited abilities.  It may look ok on a smaller tv through the usb, but on a tv larger than 27inch, it would have horrible picture quality - compared to the orignal source.

my 2 cents.

good luck.

I mean, just put your kernel and nescessary utils/modules/libraries on a cd-rom and spend some time tweaking the startup files and UI.

Thanks for the comment.  Thats what we are planning on doing ...

I'm not the typical person to start bickering on message boards, but please familiarize youself with the project before you bash it.
Thanks

Maybe this seems stupid, but perhaps the Xbox could use the Ethernet port as a fast transfer link. But it only deals with TCP/IP protocols, right?

I think the xbox has 5.1 dolby digital input.  Yep thats right, i heard that somewhere.. Not sure how it could be used, or if it is even true.. but that could be a viable input...

I am liking the PVR idea, but i am a video quality freak, and any video recorded on USB is going to look like shit espically on my 47incher.

Why is Dreamix being developed for Linux and not the MS XDK? Does the MS XDK have too many limitations or what?

Well, the biggest issue is hardware wise, right? I guess engineers need to be invloved into this even. We basically want a hardware adapter that converts analogue video signals to digital signals in real-time for a VERY resonable price, don´t we? And the Xbox doesn´t have any video input hardware at all I guess. And if we want a hardware adapter cheaply we will need to build it ourselves and some education from high-tech universities......DOOHHH!!!!!

If you are interested to get the cheapest on eI think it is about 70 USD. It´s name is Adaptec VideoOH and uses USB 1.1 interface. It will encode the video signals to MPEG-1 format.

Simple. The drivers already existed in Linux for the original design goals.

Writing USB drivers from scratch isn't easy, especially using the XDK (not documenteD)

So you ever watched the output from a digibeta? or a D1? Or better, 6 D1's tied to each other to get real HD? If you did, you never want to go back but i did and still can enjoy a movie from plain VHS because it's all about the movie so never forget that.

Yes i have, and after watching full HD tv its hard to go back.... but have you ever tried to stream audio and video through through a USB connetion on your PC? I have and it looks like shit.. and it will on a tv of anysize.  i am still sceptal of this whole PVR attempt, good luck, but i dont foresee anything amazing, i hope you prove me wrong.

Actually, we are not using a USB device at all.  A custom device is in the works which will stream video over ethernet.  We are not disclosing specifics at this time, however I will say it has onboard encoder/decoder hardware, TV tuner, and all necessary A/V inputs.

New updates next week.

**Dreamix is actually not heavily based on Freevo, however some features are similar to Freevo and that of MythTV (common PVR features)

custom video capture device using ethernet cool.

if this idea doesnt become reality maybe a usb to ethernet(10/100) adaptor would help, hopefully you could put usb2 on the cable and have it max out at 100mb/s which is slower than what usb2 is capable of but alot faster than usb1 then you can use a usb 2 capture device

www.bodylink.com.au under usb1 products
Skymaster, USB to 10/100 Ethernet Adaptor $49 aus about $25 us
