Trouble Getting Different Bios To Load
« on: October 10, 2004, 10:41:00 AM »

Hi, first of all, I have looked for tuts that'd help me out and perused the forums looking for a solution.  I'm hoping someone can recognize my problem and help me out.

Let me start at the beginning.  I was initially having issues with certain backups but solved this by using craxtion4 instead of xiso xfer.  Recently I got Crimson Skies, used dvd2xbox to backup, and the game freezes when loading a level.  If i try again, the game freezes before the dash fully exits - clearing the cache allows me to get as far back to the loading before the same problem arises.

Anyway, this is how I got to my current problem...I've read on the boards that M8 bios solves the issue with Crimson, so I went about trying to upgrade my bios.  I don't have a modchip installed yet and am therefore looking for a softmod solution in the mean time.  I downloaded a few different BFM bios's and had the same issue with all of them.  The ones I tried were m7, m8, and x2.  I put the bin in e:\biosld and edit the boot.cfg so that the romfile matched the name of the new bin I put in there.  Well, on rebooting the xbox with each of those bios, my xbox makes it to the XBOX MS splash screen and just hangs there.  I've talked with several people to make sure I am using the proper bios and they seemed to think I was and couldn't understand why I am having this problem.

I also tried using the PBL m8 installed and followed the readme - put all the files in a folder and launch the xbe from unleashx, and that just froze while loading.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what might solve my problem and allow me to get a newer bios running?  Or better yet, another way to solve the backup issue.

I realize the best solution is a modchip and I actually have one but can't install it yet because I don't have the tools yet and would like to solve this in the mean time.

Thanks to anyone who took the time to read this and more than that, offer their advice.

ps, if I left out any information that may seem important to the problem please let me know so I can update the post.

it looks like your doing everything right,  Crimson skies had issues with alot of bios's until the m8, defenitly stick with the m8 meetoo v1.2 pack.

hanging at the MS logo is usually a font issue thou, so make sure you are using the newest fonts available.

Sweet icon under your name there =]

That seems to be the gist I'm getting about Crimson skies, that I need the latest bios if I want it to work.  If you say its the font thats causing it to hang at splash screen when I use a newer bios, then how do I go about fixing this?  I guess I have the fonts that UDE used and since it was a pretty automatic procedure I am not exactly sure a) what fonts to upgrade to B) how to do it.

I have the Metoo-m8 pack from the usual places and when I follow the readme and launch default.xbe (with the files it says to include in the same dir) it just hangs on the Loading PBL screen (I launched it from unleashx)

Is this also a fonts issue?  It seems to be that if I can get that pack installer to work that may be my best bet, but again I am not sure what is causing it to lock up.

Thanks.

Ok I fixed it and will post what I did in case anyone ever runs into the similar problem.  It was actually really simple...my xbox was hanging at ms splash screen because it was looking for the dash where it didn't exist.  UDE puts the dash in E:\dashboard\default.xbe whereas the m8 BFM bios looks for it in C:\evoxdash.xbe

I just moved default.xbe and its config file to C:, renamed it accordingly, used the bios as is and my xbox booted fine, and more importantly, Crimson runs now.  The other option would have been to edit the bios boot location so that it finds the dash in E:\dashboard, but I found the first method quicker.

Anyway, thanks to people who tried to help and I hope that someone benefits from me posting a problem and fixing it myself =]
