Yes, so long as it's chipped. Just use X2.5035 and edit x2config.ini to remove the DVD check.

It can't be done without a chip. The best you seem to be able to do with a softmod is remove the PCB from the DVD, and leave that plugged in - that's what lots of people do when building slimboxes. I think that even with a chip you need to do some wiring to make the Xbox think the drive is still there - have a look at this thread, and a search through the posts in Xbox Case/Hardware modding and General Hardware/Technical Chat will throw up a whole load of similar posts.

The cheapest good chip is a DuoX2 - you can get them in BST for $13.
