What Are The Best Fonts To Use For Softmod?
« on: April 13, 2004, 01:36:00 PM »

i was wondering what fonts are the best ones to use. i used the splinter cell gamesave and then uploaded the signed pheonix bootloader with evox. i then uploaded the big fonts. i dont think i have run into a clock loop yet but i havent unplugged my box yet. i've heard that the mechinstaller fonts prevent a clock loop but also that they are no good. i've heard some good things about the b & e reloaded fonts. which font exploit should i use. thanks.  <

1. Catfish Mechinstaller fonts (by far the safest).
2. bigfonts or Bert and Ernie reloaded (both are about equally effective).
3. Don't use any fonts that aren't 1 and 2!!! Seriously, you'll probably end up regretting it.  <

Do the Catfish fonts fix the clock loop?

I know this question has been asked before, but some posts say yes, some posts say no.  <

Substituting bigfonts with catfish is not a simple drop-in replacement.  You have to take additional steps:

1. You must have your original font files, and they must be named like this:

C:\fonts\Xbox.bak
C:\fonts\XBox Book.bak

2. You must be using PBL (I think*).  It must be habibi-signed (not font-signed), and it must be in one of these locations (along with the rest of the PBL files):

E:\Hakurs\default.xbe
E:\default.xbe
E:\Phoenix\default.xbe

3a. If you want to be able to link to your MS dashboard, you have to patch xboxdash.xbe to look for BAK files and either rename it or place it somewhere else (e.g. E:\xboxdash.xbe).  Do NOT replace or delete C:\xboxdash.xbe!!

3b. Alternatively, if you already have an MS dashboard that looks for XFT files, then you can keep a second copy of the original fonts as:

C:\fonts\Xbox.xft
C:\fonts\XBox Book.xft

* That's the weird thing: When I tried signing EvoX with habibi and running it with the catfish fonts, it would hang.  I didn't try other dashes.

i did wut u said Grospolina but it still gave me the error and the red and green flashhing led. i am using the signed phoenix bios loader off of xbins. is the xbe signed correctly for use with catfish fonts. i really want to try the catfish fonts even though the bigfonts have been working great. is there really a big advantage using the catfish fonts?? maybe i dont the right pbl. idk. thanks.  <

If it's not habibi signed then you have to resign it. But if it booting straigt into an error screen it is probably some other problem. You must have a 4920 dashboard (no lower and no higher). The advantage of the mech fonts is just that they are safer.  <

i believe i have a 4920 dash because i followed the splinter cell how to in the forum and it told me to download and extract slayers evox auto exe installer. i extracted the iso and then just copied the c contents onto my c drive so i am pretty sure i have a 4920 dash. any other ideas.  <

nah if you have a 4920 dash and you renamed the original fonts from the fonts folder with the .bak extension and added the mech bert and ernie to that folder there is no way you can boot to an error screen unless some other msdash files are missing or corrupted somehow  <
