Flashed M8, Now Black Screen.....
« on: May 04, 2006, 08:37:00 AM »

Here is what I have first of all:
V1.6b with Xecuter 2.6 and Solderless Adapter
1mb M8 plus bios made with Xecuter Bios Manager and a 256 M8 plus bios

FlashBios was on the screen, popped in the disc I created that had a 100MB dump and the 1MB M8 plus bios.  Screen said XECUTER2 bios.bin flashing or something to that extent.  Flashed, Xbox turned off.  Turned back on the Xbox and nothing.  Turned off the chip, MS Dash loads fine.  Turned the chip on while on MS Dash, popped in Auto Installer to load Evox and such (forgot which one, at work, everythings at home) and it goes to the Big X and acts like its loading but it just hangs on the Big X.  So what did I screw up?
Thanks.

For starters you needed m8plus_1.6.bin used for the 1.6 xboxs. Not m8plus.bin

Second you should use an xecuter bios for your xecuter.

Pretty sure you'll need to reflash. Do you have a bank selector switch? See if both banks are pooched.
Maybe a hotswap?

I believe it was m8plus_1.6.bin but I could be wrong.  I cant check til afterwork.  Tryin to get as much feedback as I can so I can go home and fix it.  I will get an xecuter bios as well.
Sittin here checkin grading plans but all I can think about is that stupid black box sittin and waitin.

like _iffy said, try both banks. if you DID flash evox m8 to both, then you need to either hotswap or buy an external programmer....i recommend using x2_5035_v16plus_512k.bin next time

Take the two Xbox's apart, leaving the hdd and dvd drive hooked up on the one with the good chip/bios. Boot up with an install disc like slayers or aid, go to the flash bios menu, then disconnect the good chip and plug in the one you want to flash. Choose the suitable bios for your box and flash! Swap chips over again and your done (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

PS make sure flash protect is disabled on your swich bank

now evox is telling me it cannot flash the chip.
flash protect is off, bank 2 is selected and yet again and again it tells me "!! Flash Not Writable !!"
i can flash my working 2.6ce just fine on both banks, but when this other chip is installed in a hotswap evox tells me the sh** isnt gonna work.

so what now? did i get bunk chip? cause its starting to seem that way.

it wouldnt be the first time i got a shoddy product for modding offline.

scarlet_spider,

Flash rom not recognised? or  bios wrong size? or Not writable?

flash rom not recognised -> you'll need to edit the evox.ini file and add more flashroms <link>
copy all (or if you know which one) the flash = 's and paste them(it) into the evox.ini in the appropriate place.
Or, you could swap HDD's and use the HDD with the bad flash, and use the evox.ini already there.
ie: put the good chip in the bad box - start and load evox - hotswap for the bad chip - flash with evox.

bios wrong size -> make the bios the right size

Not writable -> turn flash protection off. <- if still getting this error post again.

If you're trying to flash a 1MB BIOS to your chip, you need to switch to bank 1 on the chip.

If you're using 512K... either bank is fine, but bank 2 is usually recommended.

If both chips are the same and your flashing the same bios but one wont flash, then yes, it does sound like its a fault with the chip.

It doesn't matter what bank is selected on the switch, if your flashing a 512k bios it will flash banks 1&2 regardless of setting. You need to flash a 1024k bios to take up all 4 banks and bring setting 2 into play.

What bios have you been trying with? As iffy stated in an earlier post, xecuter bios is best for xecuter chips.

Do you disable the chip before swapping them over? I think you need to do this and re-enable just before the flash.

oh wow thanks for the replies guys

but its still getting flash not writable error. ive tried both banks and took into consideration the size of the bios file as well. flash protect has been off the whole time.

this is a rundown so far

-turned on xbox with good chip installed, made sure flash protect is switched to off position.
-inserted evox cd into drive
-load evox
-browse to system utils/flash bios
-removed good chip, removed switch and d0 connectors
-installed bad chip, connected switch and d0 connectors
-clicked flash bios/evox m7
BAM! flash not writeable!

ive messed around with the bank selections, and when i turn on and off flash protect and still nothing.
this sucks cause i have a deadline now for this box and i may have to just install my good chip for the guy and wait for a return on the bunk one.

btw ive used evolution x bioses before on these chips and never had a problem. the cromwell flashbios or whatever was shipped withteh bunk chip is the problem.

I dont see how the hot swap isn't working. If your using the same box/ bios, one chip can be flashed and one cant? Did you try iffy's idea? Put the good chip in the bad box and hot swap it there.

since i recieved this chip its been giving me a headache. im about ready to give up on it and send the site it was bought from a nasty letter demanding a replacement.

so yeah ive got the bad box with a pin header installed. and like i said when hot swapping evox tells me the chips flash rom isnt writable. no other errors on all three bios file options. and when i attempted to flash my good chip with one of the bios files on evox itll start no problem. ive pretty much ruled out all other possible set backs and have concluded once again that ive recieved a poopy chip.
gawd what a pain in the arse.

if you guys have any other ideas before i send it back id appritiate it mucho.
