alrite...I need to know what the retail files are in an xbox before its even touched. Im trying to restore my dash, and I need to know what to delete, and what to change, please help, thanks.

ps, i have a "restore dashboard" game save...im sure if this actually restores my dash or not?

All the system files are stored on C:. Your gamesaves and ripped music are saved on E:. If you happen to need the original C: files, you can always download Slayer's EvoX and extract it to obtain the files.

NOOOOO I HAVE A MODDED BOX, I NEED TO KNOW WHAT FILES TO DELETE, LIKE BERT.XTF and ERNIE.XTF, I ALSO HAVE 2 DEFAULT.XBE FILES...WHICH ONE DO I DELETE!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!HELP!!!

Lose the caps and you can read the reply Blank did. On slayer's disc there are all the "retail files" like you call them. If you delete the ones that are on your xbox and not on slayers disc, you're done.

im trying to restore the ms dash....the the default.xbe files, one is for evox and one is for the ms dash am i correct? i dont need both...

just a correction. The evoxdash is usually called Evoxdash.xbe

On older boxes/bios it was renamed xboxdash.xbe and the xboxdash would be named something else.

side note: evoxdash.xbe is renamed to default.xbe when run from a disc.

ok well thanks for that,but please can someone tell me what files i need to change and what i need to delete in order to restore my ms dashboard, I DO HAVE EVOX RIGHT NOW BUT I DO NOT WANT IT. And are you telling me its ok to delete both the default.xbe files?im doin this cause i want xbox live :)actually i think it would be a good idea if one of u guys that knows lots about this stuff would make a tutorial about restoring the ms dash after installing evox.

Use any Live 2.0 enabled game and try to connect to Live. That should upgrade the dashboard to 5659.
If that fails, follow the steps outlined here:

Then use ANY Live-enabled game to install the dashboard.

then u should have 4 dirs and only 3 files on C:
Audio (dir)
fonts (dir)
xboxdashdata.

? (dir)
xodash (dir)
Xbox Book.xtf (file)
Xbox.xtf (file)
xboxdash.xbe (file)

ok...when i turn on my xbox...evox shows up, i dont want that to happen...and apparently if i try to connect to live...then it breaks my box, or i get banned either one, all i want is my MS Dashboard back. How? and i dont have live right now...im getting it, i just want my ms dash back for when i get it. o and i also have a fonts folder, with bert and ernie, and xboxbook and the other xbox file on there. what do i delete outta there? AND DO I NEED THE DEFAULT.XBE FILES? ill get u screen shots of my c drive and fonts folder

only Xbox Book.xtf and Xbox.xtf in the fonts folder.

Yours are named *.xft right now and must be renamed.

ok thanks, and one thing... Xbox Book.xtf and Xbox.xtf are not in my C drive, is this a problem? actually, can you look at those screen shots...and just tell me if everything looks ok...

still kinda weird because i have a default.xbe in the C drive and in the fonts folder, but there both different sized files
