What Dash Is Your Bios Booting? Please Answer
« on: March 08, 2006, 11:53:00 AM »

First off, I need this info for an autoinstaller that I'm working on. The chipmodded section is going to be insane with all the options available when I'm finished. This question is also only for chipmodders.

Each bios has a specific default dashboard that it boots to. Also the dash only boots from the root of a drive, meaning that it is stored directly on C, E, or F and will not be inside of a folder. For instance, most Evox bios's that aren't edited will be set to boot:

C:/evoxdash.xbe
E:/evoxdash.xbe
F:/evoxdash.xbe

I have an X3 chip in both of my box's so I can change my boot dash, by just editing my bios on screen. Most people would have to reflash their bios if it isn't set to C:/evoxdash.xbe. Basically I want to have my installer be able to change the default boot dash, but without the user having to change and reflash the bios. So I need to know what most people are booting and on which drives they are booting. The only dashs that will be supported are:

XBMC
UnleashX
EvoX
Avalaunch
Dvd2XboX

I also edit some of my dash names to new ones so that is why I would like lots of input. So far here are some examples of what I need:

C:/XBMC.xbe
C:/default.xbe
C:/XBMCdash.xbe
E:/XBMC.xbe
E:/default.xbe
E:/XBMCdash.xbe
F:/XBMC.xbe
F:/default.xbe
F:/XBMCdash.xbe

C:/Avalaunch.xbe
C:/Avadash.xbe
E:/Avalaunch.xbe
E:/Avadash.xbe
F:/Avalaunch.xbe
F:/Avadash.xbe

And just imagine that is only 2 dashs.

If you are not sure of what the filename is you are booting, just use a file manager located in a dash or program, or you can FTP in and check. It should be the only .xbe file stored the root of C:,E:,and F: (besides xboxdash.xbe, which is your M$ dash).

Cool, thanks theperfekt001. That clears up my thoughts that the bios will only boot from the root of a drive, ex. C:xbmc.xbe, E:xbmc.xbe, or F:xbmc.xbe.

Unfortunatly I won't be able to code anything for bios's booting from a folder on a partition, ex. yours at f:\apps\xbmc\default.xbe, as it would require possibly 100's of lines of code for each dash on each drive. But I might be able to implement booting a dash like that in a future release.

Since you have C:/UnleashX.xbe as your 2nd boot dash, my installer would still work if you were to select the option that "I boot C:/UnleashX.xbe".

Just curious, how did you get f:\apps\xbmc\default.xbe as your boot dash? Is that preconfigured or did you change the bios to add that?

in the x2 5035 under the boot section, i just changed the first line to this:
CODE
; 255 characters max here, format is :.xbe, e.g. "f:dashes\avalaunch.xbe"
dash1Name = f:apps\xbmc\default.xbe

I'm running XBMC as my dash at present from root of the C: drive. The latest release of XBMC had an app that was supposed to allow you to put the whole XBMC folder in your home folder (such as E:) and the patch app would point to it for you. I found this didn't work though and decided to run the xboxmediacentre.xbe from the root of my C:, then in the .xml file (also in root of C:)  I told it to look for the rest of the files it needs at C:/XMBC (XBMC folder in my C:).  My bios version is 4983.06 and since it hadn't been configured to recognise 'xboxmediacentre.xbe' I had to rename it to 'mxmdash.xbe' which it can boot. I think being able to boot anything like XBMC.xbe or XBMCdash.xbe from the C: is a must.

I had evox as my default dash for the longest time but recently switched to xbmc.  I knew my bios boot order is evoxdash.xbe, then mxmdash.xbe, then xboxdash.xbe (I think another one in there somewhere).  So instead of reflashing, (I suppose part of the reason for this post) I just renamed xbmc's xbe to evoxdash.xbe, and evox's xbe to mxmdash.xbe.  May sound confusing but essentially; xbmc is main dash and evox is backup.  (I also had to add a xbmc xml file to C: to make it work right and find xbmc's actual location under F:apps.)  Haha.

ive tried making my auto installer do this kind of function, but i keep just getting confused and scrapping it lol one day ill sit and take it step by step and do it nicely.

The x3 bios is kindof lame for booting filenames, the x2 bios you can configure to boot from virtually anywhere but the x3 bios restricts it alot, whereas even the x3 quicklaunch allows you just to point to any xbe on the drive and boot it. I wish the main booting bios could be configured aswell as the quicklaunch is, you would think it would be the other way around.

Anyways, im using unleashx at c:\unleashx.xbe and using c:\xbmc.xbe for quicklaunch xbmc.

main:   C:unleashx.xbe
backup: C:evox.xbe
third:   C:xbmc.xbe

X3 bios so I can pick the order at which they boot. This is my current. I have had them all my default at one time or another. I think I am going to stick to this order for awhile.

That's exactly what I felt. You would think that the x3 bios being more advanced than most would boot from anywhere. I do make good use of the quicklauch too.

I have kinda halted production on the autoinstaller ATM. I decided it would be better to have a softmod and hardmod autoinstaller seperate. I'm just about done with the softmod helper, so once I'm finished with that and release it I will redo the hardmod helper. I do still need more info though, so still post away.

For all the people that posted, thank you and I'm taking all of this into consideration.  smile.gif

^^ Good point, maybe you should look into using the xbe shortcut maker. It would be perfect for an installer. This way, you can set all your features to be installed to e or f, and then just have a xbe shortcut. Then you could install just the shortcut xbe to where you want it booted from, and it will boot the app/dash without having to worry about installing the files into a dif directory aswell.
