Phoenix Loader And Messed Up Video
« on: March 11, 2004, 01:42:00 PM »

I'v been doing the soft mod, specifically the font expoit for 6 months--putting it on a wide variety of boxes. Yesterday, while doing one for my mom, of all people, i ran into a problem. I was able to easily get in and change the necassary files through mechassault but when i went to run phoenix my screen started violently flickering. The phoenix loading screen and then the dash could be seen but they were severely skewed and flickering. The hack worked except that the screen is totally messed up--anything that is run after the phoenix default.xbe is loaded appears in this jagged, stuttering, format. Reboot with an official game and the machine is fine. Load through mechassault and evox looks fine.

I'm assuming it has to do with an incompatibility with a new xbox and the phoenix loader. If so, any solutions? Or should I just return the sucker?

I left in a huff and forgot to note the pertinent info. I suppose i'm just wondering if anything similar has happened to anyone else.

This won't mean anything but the xbox was released as the holiday bundle with tetris and some crappy star wars game. This didn't help me so much because i've done two boxes out of this bundle and they worked fine.

Anyone else get this crazy video thing?

If i got a refurbished box would it likely have the new precautions built into it?

as far as i know the refurbished dashboards, do not have any new security features built in, i have done one refurbished box with no problem,s just check the kernal and dash versions, and as long as your kernal is before the 5530 then you should be ok for PBL

pre 5530 should work as long as you have pbl 1.3.5 or more and m7 or x2 4979 or greater

I had no idea there was a PBL 1.3.5. I've been using 1.3. I tried the exploit tonight on a 4920/5101 new system--same errant video once it tries to load phoenix. Will have to search for a new phoenix and give it a shot--before i give up entirely

OK--I've never cganged the bios while using the soft mod. Would I grab an x2 4981 or an M7 and just call it from the phoenix config file? Or, do I have to rename the bios xboxrom.bin in order for phoenix to boot it?

OK--now I've tried pbl 1.4.1 and the 4981 bios but it simply won't boot into evox. I get to what appears to be the reading of xboxrom.bin and it is a black screen. Old phoenix and evox I get messed up video--new phoenix and evox i get no video. For all intents and purposes, this should work--but it's not. Shitty, i gotta get an older box. Perhaps my new phoenix default.xbe is corrupt or unsigned--who knows. My advice--do not get a new box--what a pain

hey man, im having the same problem

I tried using pheonix on a v1.5 that i just bought and it get crazy video signals exactly like you. the 007 exploit works fine, and ftp works fine, but then when you try to run pheonix loader and boot to evox the video output is corrupt. And any other game i load from evox is also crazy video. I think it is something to do with there new 1.5's. Anyone have any ideas? this is a major issue! haha

The first new box tried was a 5530 kernel--no dice----but, the second one i tried was a 5101--a version verified to have worked. The sort of effect the loader is producing looks more like a macrovision type assault on the hack than a death nail like the xbox live update--I'm willing to say that it may be hardware induced--try popping a mod chip on the new ones-the board have been changed.

Only use old machines. I grabbed an used box after returning the new ones and the sucker worked first shot--was even lucky to get one that played cd-r media--who knows how long these bad boys will stick around--get ready for  a dss style consolidation of old hardware
