:UPDATE:I've played around with it some, and for my purposes, I've found settings that work like a charm.
As stated before, I use LightWave 7.5, and for either I export the model to 3DS format. Text replacement should (must?) be one flat model. Custom rotation: H 0, P 90, B 0. In Deep Exploration, invert the face orientation and export (Save As) to .X format using Texture Coords, Save Normals, ASCII mode, and Turn To Left-Hand System checked (all else blank) and 4 max points per poly. [Source: a few, but Klutsh's posts (
this one in peticular) were most helpful, IMO]
As far as I can tell, "X" replacements don't require you to flip the face orientation. Also, when exporting to .X format, the settings are: ONLY ASCII mode and Turn To Left-Hand System are checked, and 4 max points per poly.
Hope this sheds some light on a subject that's been covered really piecemeal all over the forums.
