M8plus + Evtool 1.0.9 Ate My Xbox
« on: February 24, 2005, 11:13:00 PM »

This is not a cry for help since my chip is fukced anyway - just a big confused *sigh* expressed  with a string of words...

I downloaded the new version of EVtool 1.0.9 and the M8plus-bios the other day.
I have a v.1.5 so i used the M8plus-bios and NOT the M8plus_16 which is for the v.1.6-boxes.
Anyhow. I flashed my crappy Aladdin 64 pro and it worked fine.

Today i desided to start playing with the bios with the new EVtool-version and try the new Evox-logo-change option. So i made a new logo, saved it in .dds-format and embeded it into the bios. Changed the colours of the X and saved the changed bios. I didn't do any crusual changes to anything else.

I flashed the box with the changed bios and now it's fukced (on-off-on-error code 5).
I just find it weird since i tryed the unchanged M8plus-bios first.
I've played with bioses before and they've all worked fine.

Anyhoo...  :(

well since u said u got a xbox v1.5 ... i would recommend u stick with the X2.4983 bios... or if u plan on editing the bios stick with the X2.4981 as the X2.4983 cant be edited since it's encrypted etc.

I've edited both Evox- and Xecuter-bioses before without any problems.
The M8plus bios that i used was -obviously- editable and should've worked on my v1.5.

The only thing that i wasn't sure of was the "LBA48 support and default partition table option"-setting. I left it as default: "Partition 6 takes rest of the drive".
Maybe i should've checked the "Ignore hard drive partition table" (?)

Oh, this is sooo boring and i'm so poor and can't afford a new chip right now!
 :D  :grr:

The X2 83 BIOS can be edited just not by XBTool. You have to Hex edit it manualy. Psilocybe, angelfly, and I were working on changing the blob to diffrent colors. I dont know if any one posted the offsets sense then of the colors for the Xlogo, Text, or TM removal. I am willing to bet that some one would know this stuff now but maybe not.

Think i got it...
Error code 5 means: HDD unlocked....
xbox-scene.com/articles/errorcodes.php
but if you´ve chosen "partition 6 gets rest" in evtool and you already had a partitioned hdd using the max of 137gb(without lba48 patch), it would end in data corruption....

Hoping you are such a freak you made loads of backups during your 'expiriment with my bios period' and have one left on your Pc, you can either do this :

use this tut. to format your drive: http://www.how2xbox.com/harddrive.htm
Pay attention when booting up with the cd you burned, first step should be to lock your drive using the eeprom you put on the cd, so at start you chooce 3)Linux with locking/unlocking options, and lock your drive

Since error code 5 means: HDD unlocked, i think this is it.
Put the disk back in your box and go....

Option 2 hopes you still have your original xboxdrive lying around (assuming you placed a bigger one in your box, and didnt frie the original one....duh)
Replace the 'unlocked' drive with your original one and it should boot again, from here follow the above mentioned tut. but just use your original drive to ftp the backup you need. Dont screw it up, use it as a backup only!! Saved my ass several times :)
Now unlock your drive and reinstall it in your box, e voila!

Let us know...

First of all, thanks a bunch for the effort =).
I haven't tryed your suggestion yet, but i really doubt it will work since the erroneous behavior  (on, off, on, error code 5) gives the impression of not giving the DVD or the HD a chance to boot, so i dont think that "HDD Unlocked" is the primary problem here.
I've tryed the original HD, but it wont work either ...but i believe that i unlocked the original after removing it, so... =/.

I suppose you know how the on, off, on, error code-behavior works.
Maybe i should've mentioned that i have a Alladin-chip (press and hold the powerbutton aprox. two seconds = Chip ON.)
I press and hold the button, but it shuts down after 0.5 seconds, then it comes on again by itselfs and boots, probably with the chip OFF since the ON-procedure gets interrupted, then X-logo -> error code screen. I cant reach the MS--dash either.
In other word: i cant boot a CD-RW if the chip doesnt seem to "be there" at all.

So after this confused post: does someone still think that a LOCKED HD might fix my problem? ...or should i throw my xbox to the polar bears?

EDIT: I just found out that Error code 5 "Unlocked HD" is the reason why i cant reach the M$-dash (yeah, noob me!). I never locked the new HD. So i guess theres no chance that a locked HD might make my chip cooperate.
This post is just getting more confusing ...and lame.

im pretty positive that the "plus" version doesnt edit with evtool. at least not with version 1.0.8.
it will load the bios, let you edit and save it, but when u reopen the saved edited bios file it appears as normal with no changes.
i loaded my "edited" bios to my box and saw no changes !

i had no idea so i stuck with the offcial m8 ... draw back is i now have the mem time issue on 1.6bs !

I'm having the same problem on my 1.6 maching I load up the M8plus_16.bin into evtools and it won't hold any .dds file I try to import.  I save it and then re open it and the import logo is unchecked once again.

It only holds the file in the sample folder called m8.dds - none of the other sames will hold in the save.

Please help!

yea basically you messed up the bios on your chip and need to reflash it.  You would be able to boot with the normal ms bios but since your drive is unlocked it can't load the dashboard.  double edged sword.  I don't know much about the aladdin but can you get a programmer and reflash it outside of the xbox.  That seems to be your only solution.

if you can't afford a new chip, I recommend trying a softmod for the mean time, until you find a new chip.
