M8+ Causing Motherboard Damage On 1.6?
« on: November 23, 2004, 07:51:00 PM »

I have a 1.6 Xbox.. not a 1.6b.. a 1.6..with a Duox chip that someone installed for me.

It camed pre-flashed with the evo m8_16 bios... I wanted to modify the bios a bit(change the dashboard names... ) and I couldn't find a tool that would load this bios... so I got my hand on the m8+ bioses... m8plus_16....

The nfo suggest that the m8plus_16 is for 1.6 and 1.6b ONLY..

After flashing.. the console ran well for about 2-3 days... and suddently.. it froze in a game... now it does the christmas tree(tries to boot 3 times then FRAG)

I tried booting with the chip disabled... changed the rom bank... even unplugged the modchip... nothing works.. always the triple boot problem..

The guy who installed the chip tells me the motherboard is probably fried because of the new flash(the new memory instructions or something like that)

Are you aware of any problems with the m8+ bioses on "non-b" 1.6 xbox?

Thx

yeah, that's pretty much a load of crap!  It's nearly impossible for a bios to fry the motherboard!  The LPC rebuild should prolly be checked and resoldered.  I've seen this before and it was the LPC rebuild that needed to be done over.

actually the bios CAN fry the board, that's the entire reason behind the seperate 1.0-1.5 and 1.6 bioses.. the hardware inits are different. however, it shouldn't have fried anything if you used the right bios version.

ok... and is a M8+ bios (m8plus_16) compatible with a regular 1.6console(not 1.6b) ??

The installer tells me it is not and the m8plus bios should only be used on 1.6b consoles

M8plus_16 will work fine on any v1.6 or v1.6b.

are you 100% sure of this?

The guy tells me he checked the LPC and everything is fine!...

Really weird... he seem to be a good installer... with experience...

Yes we are.

Is there a way to tell without opening the box what my xbox version is? Here are my specs.
Manufacture Date: 09/27/04
Made in China: 06
Kernel: 5838
Dash: 5960
DVD: Philips

I'm sure it has to be a 1.6 or 1.6b from all the readings. I just bought it 2 weeks ago. Everything is still factory specs, never connected to Live so the dash is original, and I would like to avoid opening it for now if possible.
Also, what's the diff in 1.6 versus 1.6b? Maybe a video chip, or something else?
Thanks

You do indeed have a 1.6 or a 1.6b... The differences are the ram chips; 1/6 uses Samsungs, 1.6b uses hynix.
