I'm Not To Clear On Locking A Hdd

What does locing a HDD do?  Right now my HDD is not locked what are the are Benefits of  locking it?

benefits of locking the hd is so you can use the stock dash for live purposes.  You will get an error if you try to boot the system with the stock m$ dash if it isnt locked.
