I have a copy of Mechwarrior and a memory card with the stuff from MechassaultwithEvox.rar on it.
I tested it on someone's old Xbox and it got to the Evox screen.

I don't yet have an xbox...
I plan to just use the savegame to FTP in, and replace the C drive with UXE or UDE2...

My question is: is it possible that if I buy a new xbox, it won't let me run the 'run linux' save and let me FTP into it?
If this is the case, I think I'll just get a used one...

However, I would prefer an Xbox that would play CD-r's, and I heard that newer ones tend to play CD-rs more than old ones...
I primarily just want to be able to play Xvids using XBMC.
It wouldn't be too much trouble to just use FTP to transfer ones I want to play and then delete them later tho.

Any suggestions on whether I should get a new xbox or used?

its gonna be hard because you need the samsung drive but i forgot which model has the samsung drive then theres samsungs and thompsons that do and don't

but you can always just modify the drive or just put a pc dvd drive in there

i got my xbox brand new this summer...a 1.6....although i cannot take screenshots yet without a video capture card on my pc, my xbox can do just about anything, it can read any type of media, cd-r, cd-rw, dvd-r, dvd+r, dvd-rw, and dvd+rw, hope that helps you out some :)

first off, i would not recomend manually replacing the fonts and hex-editiing the M$ dash to work, because you are a newb (you haven't even BOUGHT an xbox yet, no offense) and, out of experience, it is really easy to screw up your xbox when you do everything manually. To be safe than sorry, get ltools 1.8: it backs up your entire C drive in case something happens (i.e. you are you let someone screw around with the C drive via FTP), it backs up your eeprom (hard drive password/key that your xbox uses to unlock the HD (another security attempt made by M$) that can be used to unlock your hard drive without your xbox and then can be used in xboxHDM (if you don't know what i'm talking about then READ!) if you fuck up your xbox. So, your ass is safe, and there's virtually no way of making a 6 pound paperweight out of your xbox.

And about the CD-R compatibiltiy in xbox's, only a very few number of them can read CD-R's (it's a fluke, really). In order to make your xbox read CD-R's, you're gonna have to find a Samsung 616-t or -p DVD drive and mod it to xbo specifications, like Millenia said.

you dont have to do anything except replace the C drive...
i'm gonna back it up first tho...

anyway, my biggest concern is is it possible for me to buy an xbox and the mechassault save game won't load at all so that i can't even ftp in?
