Alright, here is my situation:

I've modded my xbox (about a year or more ago) using the 007 exploit, later i added a bigger HDD. All of this worked fine, though i was never able to use the MSdashboard anymore.
Until now I never needed it, though for enabeling the 5.1 sound it seems to be required.

Now my question(s), can 5.1 sound be enabled without the msdashboard?
If not, what steps can i take to make my evox be able to load msdash?

(I do have a full backup of the original hdd without mod)

Did you change the name of the fonts folder?  Most tutorials call for it to be F0nts instead of fonts.  If so you have to hex edit your orginal xboxdash file and change that.

Hmm, I think I indeed forgot to work with the fonts folder...

So basically: create a 2nd fonts folder f0nts for example, put the original fonts there and hex the (renamed) original xboxdash so it looks at the f0nts?

Yes, that is exactly it.

Here's the directions, quoted from a tutorial for EvoX installation on a softmod using UDE 2.

Section 7 - Getting To M$ Dash From EvoX:
64. First off, go to System Utilities in Evox and choose "Backup"

65. FTP into C: on your xbox and put a copy of org-xboxdash.xbe (from step 40) in the backup directory (after we hex edit the xbe it won't be signed anymore; this will just provide you with a backup)

66. Download evox.ini and org-xboxdash.xbe (not the backup one) to your desktop or where ever you want to work with them from.

67. Open evox.ini in notepad or whatever you use for text editing and change: MSDashBoard = "c:\msdash.xbe" to MSDashBoard = "c:\org-xboxdash.xbe". Save and upload to xbox. Overwrite existing file.

(Note: If you have a M$ Dashboard that DOES NOT have a xbox live tab, then you do not need to hex edit anything. Skip to step 69)
(Note: If your using ldots Patcher skip step 68 and just upload and overwrite the patched xbe and goto step 69)

68. Open the hex editor and search for this hex value: 66006F006E00740073 which in ascii is "f.o.n.t.s". Depending on your xbe version it may return 2 or 4 results. At either rate on the far right it should have highlighted "f.o.n.t.s"; simply change the letter 'o' to a '0' (zero) which is the directory we created in step 41 to keep the original fonts. Save and upload to xbox. Overwrite existing file.

69. Reboot the Xbox and in Evox click on "MS Dashboard" and presto, your back in business if you want simple memory management or just like two dashes.

If you have a new vewrsion of xbmc installed, you could enable 5.1 in the settings.

Current version of UnleashX also has 5.1 enable in it settings ... just another tip  B)

another tipi: use nkpatcher with virtual C and you can use the msdash without hex editing just fine (if you unmodded your shadow C)

Thanks for all the help so far guys. So far I haven't been able to test yet since my 007 is at a friends place and i'll have to get my FTP function up and running first. I'll pick it up tonight, and most likely will test tomorrow. I'll let you guys know how it went!!

Last update: It's WORKING!

Managed to get the msdash work, basically got it working in 5 mins after I got back onto my xbox using 007.
Indeed forgot the f0nt folder and the hex on the original msdash.

Now to upgrade xbmp to xbmc  to get that feature as well.
