Flash With M8 And Screen Goes Blank
« on: July 22, 2004, 12:49:00 AM »

I tried to flash with a pre-patched M8 bios and after rebooting, the xbox doesn't boot. I flash a M7 bios before and everything works well.

Is there any way i can flash it back?
The problem is it won't even go into my eVox screen now...

Please Help.....

more classic examples of, "if it ain't broke, dont f*** with it.."  wink.gif

Except that EvoX M8 has more compatible IGR (example, Soul Calibur 2) and I wanted to take advantage of that. smile.gif

Anyway, I booted up with my friends chip and hotswapped my chip in while the Xbox was running. At least I'm up and running again, although I'm still wondering what the hell happened with M8.

Same here!

I've flashed many bioses, used the new evox tool for m8, flashed it with Evox now xbox is dead...Evox was hanging on earsing the chip. I used to have a lpc mod v2 in it, I guess i start looking for a new modchip...sad.gif

I'm not really game enough to re-flash, so I'm just wondering...is this a problem with M8 or is it an EVtool bug?

Well, one should never re-flash without a method of recovery. Seems lots of errors on Xecuter chips through incorrect sizing.
Since I have balls of steel (and a brain like a pea) I have been flashing my unrecoverable Aladdin  blink.gif  dry.gif  several times over the last few days as Nghtshd has brought out new refinements to EVTool, making no-ani, different presets, fan speeds, boot orders and now logo patching.
Am I just lucky, but everything is working perfectly, and I love this sort of auto-sensing Eject-fix (still fuzzy on that one, but it is great).
Never break what you can't fix! But I reckon you would see dozens of posts very quickly if there was anything major wrong, for sure.

Edit: All Aladdin flashing done with Xflash v2 for SST...you know what. NOT Evox.

Against my better judgement, I just reflashed with EvoX M8, this time making sure I had an X2 BIOS intact in the other bank. wink.gif

The good news is it loads, so its definitely an EvTool bug.
The bad news is I'm getting an Error 21 as soon as the flubber animation is finished. Oh well. It's booting CD media, so the BIOS is working at at least.

Okay i recovered my bad flash with some brains and wids smile.gif
I think it's a bug in evtool, since i used m8 before with evotool 1.0.2. I wanted to change the logo so i upgraded to 1.0.3., used a sample pss, and boom there you go, bad flash. Í'm going to flash again, stay tuned...

BlaBLong, your case does not sound like a bug in EVtool.

You said in a previous post:

If Evox hangs erasing the chip then you reallcan't blame the ROM file you were using. It should flash any file you give it if it is the right size.

Sorry, I can't remember now, but don't you get an error 21 if your original dash tries to boot and some of the files are missing/hacked/etc?

grug,

What is the path to your dashboard? Could you launch the original dash before installing M8 and have you tried an unpatched M8?

If you get the error 21 right before the dash loads and DVD/CD booting works then this is a dash related issue. I doubt that a bug in EVtool would cause the MS dash to give an error 21, the question is, why is it trying to load the MS dash (assuming it is).

BTW, if none of the 4 dahsboards listed in the EVtool dialog are found then it will try to load c:\xboxdash.xbe. So I'm very curious as to the state of your dashboard files, your clock, and the path you set to your dashboard.

If you want to email me directly about this I'll look further into the problem.

I have a v1.4 box and an xbit chip. It WILL NOT boot evox_m8... M7 works fine... xecuter2 4983 works fine... I have tried both the virgin M8 and the prepatched M8... both seem to allow the xbox to "run" but not "boot" There is not video\audio output at all... the xbox does not FRAG, but after letting ti go for a couple of minutes then trying to blindly navigate to "power off" on my evox menu (at the very bottom so i am pretty positive that i am on it) it does nothing...

Like I said, the patched M8 (w/EvTool) simply would not boot my Xbox. The unpatched M8 BIOS was the one causing the error.

I have both evoxdash.xbe and avalaunch.xbe on the F: partition, so its not surprising it didn't load them, since I didn't patch it (since I don't want a dead Xbox again.) xboxdash.xbe is very much intact on C:. If I turn the modchip off completely, it works.

The error is unrelated to the problem I had with EvTool.

Basically, EvTool-patched M8 = dead Xbox (much like cyberdork33, takagen, and BlaBLong)
Unpatched M8 = weird error 21, but can boot from media and everything else works fine.

Ok. I solved the Error 21 problem. Somehow my Video setting in the EEPROM got screwed up. Even though everything was in PAL, ConfigMagic listed "Unknown, Region 4" instead of PAL or NTSC. So I fixed that and now everything loads again.

The unpatched M8 is working 100% now, so now I'll try patching it and seeing if I can kill my Xbox again.

edit: OK, EvTool worked this time. I'm thinking it didn't like my custom logo last time and thats why my Xbox killed itself.

Dear NghtShd,

You have a point, but i was not trying to blame, I was thinking on loud.
I think i was unlucky then, just reflashed the chip agian with a bios made with 1.0.2. and no probs. I don't have the guts to try it with 1.0.3. because i've a lpc mod v2 solution and I don't know if I can recover that easily again.

But if no one else has these problems than it's not a bug in evtool 1.0.3

Keep up the good work!
Cheers

No problem. I just wanted to point out that there's a difference between a bad flash and a bad BIOS. If flashing fails it's not the BIOS.

1.0.3 does nothing different from 1.0.2 if you load the pre-patched M8. If you load the original M8 it patches it first and then tests it to make sure it's identical to M8 pre-patched, so I doubt that 1.0.3 would have any patching bugs that 1.0.2 doesn't have, but there's no need to upgrade to 1.0.3 if you have pre-patched M8 files.

Problem could appear on X2.X lite 'cause of the way the mod use to adress banks.
Remember 4982 ? if so you should understand.
