Softmodding A Chipped Box

Is there any harm by softmodding a chipped boxed?  I have someone that wants to have the same look as a soft-modded box, but he has a chipped installed.  Additionaly can you remove the chip and replace the orginal hard drive and begin the softmod process from that point?

The same look? What?

Functionality has nothing to do with looks....

ADD: If you are talking about the dashboard, you DO NOT need to be softmodded to do that....  :lol:
