Xecuter Bios Debate
« on: April 01, 2004, 01:49:00 PM »

Well' I've tried posting this topic in the xecuter forum but they all seem to be out to lunch or avoiding the topic.

First off, I am an installer, and rather good at it if I do say so. All my customers who actually know something, in other words only a quarter, are worried about the new X3. Why because of the Bios imbiguity. The what? you may ask. Well here ya go:

1)Xecuter 2 bioses work on most chips including Xecuter 1 chips.

2)Xecuter made a big deal about the 4981 being the last bios that they were going to release for the X2.

3)Because of this are they implying that the new xecuter 3 bios's won't work in the Xecuter 2X chips?

What do you think?

Does anyone actually know? :(

If this isn't what it means then why is the xecuter forum soo quiet. Perhaps they know that if this is true then Xecuter fans will be foced to upgrade to a new chip meaning more money for them until the become rich the same way M$ did by releasing new versions every year that must be bought or you'll be left in the way side? :grr:  :grr:  :grr:  And they will get it, because everone knows Halo 2 will be too big of a target not to instill new copy protection, requiring clients to eigther buy new chips, or well you know the alternative.

Okay That was a tangent but the lack of information has me scared along with my customers. :lurk:

I'm sorry to post here but I can't seem to get anyones attention in my own topics. Normally I wouldn't do this but 4 hour wait has caused some desperation. If you don't know what I'm talking about let me...
Recap:

X1 chips can usually run X2 bios's.

Team Xecuter sent an NFO file with their last bios saying it will be the last made for the X2 chips.

Becuase of the big deal they made about the bios being "The Last". does this mean that the X2 chips will not be compatible with the X3 bios's similar to the SmatXX chips private OS.

Basically: will we all need to upgrade our chips when the X3 comes out in order to play Halo 2 backups since it will probibly need a new bios knowing M$?

im hoping they will make a bios for the newer games, but i dont think that M$ can do anything to the games to make the game not be able to be backed up on the hdd.

I know they can't stopp HD backing up. The worry is wether or not the old and current Xecuters will be able to handle the new Xecuter 3 bios since they won't be making anymore Xecuter 2 bios's and Halo will probible need a new bios.

The NFO file says this:
QUOTE
We hope you enjoy what is now most definatley the last X2 bios
release

In other words, the new BIOSes will be called X3_xxxx instead of the current X2_49xx.. It has nothing to do with the modchip, only the BIOS series.

Most likely, there will still be releases for the 3rd Gen and earlier chips.

you can flash an x1? news to me.

and why in Gods name do you think that a CHIP will have anything to do with getting around any type of 'protection' in a game?

Nobody will be forced to do anything.  As heinrich said, new protections will be circumvented in the BIOS, or in the XBE itself...not the chip.  If Xecuter doesn't release a BIOS, someone else may.

I see no way that they could make a bios that doesn't work with other chips, unless it's a bios too big to fit on other chips.  The bios works the same no matter what chip its on.  In order for xecuter to make a bios that only works on x3, it would have to be huge, and therefore the chip would require a lot of space, raising modchip prices, and lowering the (wonderful) ability of having multiple bios' installed.  This would, in turn, lower the functionality of the x3.

In other words, x3 bios will be compatible with any chip that is flashable, and will most likely be 256kb unless they have an embedded xbe, possibly raising the size to 512kb or maybe even 1mb.  This would limit smaller chips (256kb chips) from working.

Wrong.
The xenium OS and smartxx OS are just bios's, do they work on any chip?

I dont think people should read into it too much.

I doubt they would risk losing so many fans and theyve always supported them in the past in my experience.

X1 X2 X3 with regards to the bios are just a series of labels. Like if a software manufacturer makes a small improvement to his program he will go from version 2.1 to 2.2. However if he makes a big improvement with many new features he may see fit to call it 3.0 to make the distinction between the versions.

Assume it will at least run on every mod chip.  There may be functions in particular to X3 chips but the majority of the functionality will be universal.  Of course, if you want a guarantee of complete functionality to every detail you should likely install and X3 (sort of like Matrix people pissed at the no eject fix on the X2 4981 bios - oh well).
