I Feel This Is A Legit Question About Bios
« on: March 13, 2004, 06:28:00 AM »

Ok I'm actually deciding to finally invest in a modchip (I'm not a complete retard) I build my own gaming PC's and I've been pretty submersed in that area for quite some time.  Finally was able to afford my FX5950 and Audigy 2 new mobo and CPU, so now that I've been monitoring the whole mod scene enough to see it's been darn near ironed out, I want to get a mod chip and have a fix on an Xecuter 2 but what is the preferrable bios to go with? I found recently that I cannot ask for an Xecuter 2 4981 (as it is illegal) as well as the EvoxM7.  My questions are:

why are they both illegal?

and is X2 > M7? or is M7 < 4981 ?
see I think it's all a legit question, I'm not asking for those two just insight on them before I make any moves.

both are illegal because both are hacked MS code

and as for which is better, its really a matter of opinion, although the new 4981 is good because it blocks Live (to prevent accidental banning)

Ahh, but ARE they?

If you reflash your PC's copyrighted, patented BIOS with a newer copyrighted, patented BIOS, are you infringing copyright?  No.  If you translate all the text in the BIOS to German, then flash it, are you infringing copyright?  No.  If that German BIOS were to be uploaded to driverguide.com so that everyone could benefit from a German-translated BIOS, would the manufacturer object?  I shouldn't think so.

A "hacked" Xbox BIOS consists of M$ code minus some M$ code plus some non-M$ code.

By flashing your BIOS you're in effect deleting a little bit of copyright material and replacing it with a little bit of non-copyright material.  M$'s code is still there.  It's just not ALL there. rolleyes.gif

Don't know about the "change" bit.  as for "re-use", well you ain't.  It's Xbox code going into an Xbox console.  It's not like you're trying to emulate one or build a clone.

Anyway, I don't remember seeing any licence agreement that I had to agree to before I opened my Xbox box, so fuck 'em.  M$ should be grateful that hackers are making it easier for Xbox owners to "afford" games wink.gif  and play them.  The fact that [chipped] Playstation owners were able to get games for a fiver helped Sony slaughter higher-spec.  (and better built) competition from Nintendo and Sega.

This is very true......And I have never yet heard of anybody getting into any trouble using and/or doing anything with a bios of any type?......
