How To Flash 4981 Using Evox On 2.3b Lite
« on: February 17, 2004, 04:59:00 AM »

Sorry for the basic question, but hours of searching numerous forums still leave me with a few questions.

I purchased a V1.5 xbox premodded with X2 2.3b lite and flashed with bios 4979 and the evox dash. I would like to flash to 4981.06 (I still have original HD) and install the avalaunch dash.

My xbox has the c/bios/ folder with 4 different bios files. They are all 256K. And they are the same files listed when select the Flash Bios utility in EvoX.

My questions are:
1) Do I simply FTP my 4981.06 into the c/bios folder, set the X2 switches to BANK 1 and UNPROTECT and then use the EvoX Flash Bios util and select the 4981.06 bios from the list?

2) If those are the proper steps, does my 4981.06 bios need to be any larger than 256K (the 4 files in the c/bios folder now are all 256k) or do I need to limit the number of files in the c/bios folder to 4 filesx256K so that the total is 1 Meg ?

Thanks for your help. This forum has answered many of my other noobie questions, thanks.

what you said in #1 is completely correct.  leave the size 256k you don't have to worry about anything else.

I thought that when using an X2.3b lite the bios size has to be at least 512k?  Whenever I flash my 2.3b lite, I make a 1Mb bios file using XBtool, ftp that over to the bios folder and flash from evox with the chip set on bank 2 (I dont know if that is significant).  I didnt realise you could use a 256K file, correct me if Im wrong though.... :uhh:

I tried flashing with just the 256K and although evox showed that the flashing took place but when I rebooted and checked the settings, it showed that 4979 was still installed.
So, I used x2bmv2 and loaded the 256K into each of the 4 banks and created a 1 Meg file. Flashed showed the same success as with the 256K but this time, after a reboot, the settings showed the 4981 (actually 1.4980.06) was the installed bios.
I don't know if it would work using the 512K size file. I can't test it as I have just screwed up my xbox trying to install avalaunch. I'll test it and post once I get that cleared up.

Just use flashx.  It's specificailly for flashing Xecutor chips and you can select which bank to flash instead of flashing both banks (like you did with the 1mb BIOS).
