New Xbox Bios
« on: January 21, 2004, 04:52:00 PM »

I am a programmer, ive modded many a PC bios.  Myself and a group of colleagues are planning on doing on what we think is the ultimate XBOX Bios Mod.  We arent releasing any details on how we plan to program, but we have a preliminary list of features, and as this bios would be quite large, it will require more than 256k, and you will need a chip to accomodate that.

Hardware support to boot off a USB Harddrive or memory stick.
Run unsigned code
No Reset on eject.
Use Green light in xbox as HD activity, Red or DVD activity
in BIOS Dashboard, filemanager, and ftp server for recovery purposes.
TV Input support in bios via the usb ports and a usb tv tuner of our choice
Ability to have the xbox power on/off at certain times

And many other features
We call our bios Slarix, and we have a dash to go with it.  Features include:
Ability to burn a DVD of an xbox game right off the hard drive, if a dvd burner is installed,
ability to record tv show to xvid file format
Resolution Changing

Of course we have yet to touch a computer or code one line of either, as we do not know if these ideas would be widely accepted. Please Post regarding your opinions.

Slarix is - Jpolster2002(Jeff) BlackMoonx(Adam) ShadowofLight(gregory) and Nitrous56(Melissa)

It sounds great, but also like a lot of work.

Good Luck with it.

sounds pretty sweet to me....  I just hope you can kept it below 512KB....  As I still would want to be able to use another BIOS on my MOD for or purposes....  But the ability to boot from a USB HDD or Flash Media is totally kick ass....  As you say not to sure if you can do it, but if you can....  Man....   I'd be pretty happy....   But I do believe the Xbox is USB 1.0 so actually trying to play a game from a USB HDD might be a little slow....  But I'm just putting out ideas....   Go a head and build it....  I'm sure "They will come"...

the hdd/dvd activity would need wiring.  can't be controlled from bios
the tv support would require built in drivers that you would have to create to work on the xbox for all possible usb tuner cards
the power off could work, but the power on would require extra wiring, there is no suspend mode, it's either on or off.  you could however have the leds turn off at a certain time and then have a black screen appear (bad for big screen tvs)

Call me cynical, but this line:

Immediately raised flags in my mind as well. I don't know why anybody would "modify" a PC BIOS - it's a legacy vestage of the PC World that's sloughed off as soon as Windows or Linux begin booting.

Still, good luck.

Several Reasons why you would modify a PC bios:

Unsupported CPU Support (ie.  Tualatin on a normal 370 board)
Additional Overclocking options hidden from the user.
To add a logo, manualy
Customize  startup messages
Change CPU Strings... IE Replace every occurance of Duron with Crappon
Many other reasons.

Im glad we got your input.  Maybe now we can replace impossible features with possible ones, like eject cd on power off or something like that.  also if there is anyone out there... is the new xboxes ATX PSU compliant?  the connector is the same, but what about the voltages

I'm most interested in how you became a programmer without touching a computer.
