Setting The Fan To A Lower Speed Than The Default.
« on: September 10, 2003, 10:32:00 AM »

I don't know if I'm the only one who got a bit disapointed when I realized that the new version of xBtool only could set the fan speed to a higher value than the default or am I the only one who thinks the noise coming from the fan i very annoying...

Well this is how to set it to a lower value......

Open a "palin" X2_4977 in XBtool_1.0.8b11 and configure it the way you normally do.

Use 'Save As...' to save the bios, using a new name

Now use 'Unpack...' to unpack the bios you've just created

Unpack will create three files (2bl.img, remainder.img & xboxkrnl.img) in a directory names as the bios.

Open the xboxkrnl.img in a HEX-editor

Jump to offset OXAB580, here you'll see the values 0F 0A ... (The value 0A is the hex value for a fan-speed of 10)

Change the 0A value to your desired fan-speed, f.ex. 05

Save the file

Using 'Pack..' in XBtool_1.0.8b11 pack the patched file to a new bios-file

Install the new bios on your Xbox

Of course, lowering the spped of the fan, will make the CPU go warmer. However after an hour with a fan speed of 2, the CPU temp of my Xbox went to 55 degree, which is not that bad

55°C is cool for a downgrade.
Do you have the original fan?

My original fan was about 66°C
after running an hour.

Now I replaced it with a silent 80mm one.
Now it's 58°C after running an hour.

Not much cooler but sure a lot more silent.

If people really want a lower speed option then I can allow that, but I didn't want people accidentally burning up their CPUs and all the Xboxes I ever heard were pretty quiet. I could probably just add a warning dialog if you set the speed below the normal default.
