Change Name Of Xbox With Action Replay?
« on: March 19, 2004, 09:43:00 AM »

I saw the tutorial Making Saves Action Replay Compatible.  It said to have nothing (such as readme.txt files, etc.) in the UDATA folder BUT the game save folder.

My question is... Can you place a file that IS on the Xbox ALREADY into the UDATA folder (NICKNAME.XBN) and have it overwrite the existing NICKNAME.XBN file?

I'm trying to figure out how to do this for a guy with an unmodded box that doesn't live close to me.

Thanks.

NICKNAME.xbn can be replaced safely. I have tested the change and it did not have any effect that I could see.

Just another tidbit of information that I just found out... when you recieve your xbox from the store before you play a game like halo you have no name.  I always thought that all the names were predetermined but they are not.  There was no NICKNAME.XBN on my factory xbox.

Also you can hexedit the nickname.xbn file to say whatever you want.  I know you usually cannot use underscores in the nicknames but I use a underscore in my name "Chon_Lee"  Hex editor solved this... Have not checked it with any other game than halo.  If there is any further news I will keep you updated.  <

if your xbox is brand new and youve never saved/played a game on it then it has no name..  ive heard even the first time you load a level your xbox name could be created.  <

Yes  I am sure... when you put a game in the first time, say a game like halo then that game will create your NICKNAME.XBN... My next test is to see if this name will be random if I delete it... I am guessing it would.  <

Concerning Action Replay...

Well, it probably won't work for one good reason, how would you copy it over? Probably the easiest/only way is to stick a modified NICKNAME.XBX in with a softmod with BoXplorer, boot it, and copy the files over.

Your trying to do...

/Mem/120390139           < A Gamesave
/Mem/NICKNAME.XBX    < Your Idea

While the XBox reads it as...

/Mem/120390139           < Copy to HD (/E/UDATA/*)
/Mem/NICKNAME.XBX     < The hell is this? Ignore it...

Either it won't show up or it'll call it a corrupt gamesave, whereas you can only delete it :lurk:

Concerning deleting, editing, copying over the file via FTP/BoxPlorer/Etc...

Edit2: Yes you can delete NICKNAME.XBX all you like, because any game that uses the nickname randomly chooses a new one if its not present.

Rice's Box:
Nickname was "Penguin"...
Deleted NICKNAME.XBX...
Loaded Halo...
Name Is Now "King"...

Good point... I don't know how you are going to get the file on the xbox but it can safely be replaced.  <
