Bios Loading Another Bios?
« on: July 11, 2003, 12:14:00 AM »

Kind of a far reach, but ...

Is it at all possible for a BIOS (ie, a modified Cromwell) to unload itself while loading another BIOS?

For instance, could a custom (modified cromwell perhaps) bios loaded on the first 256k of a 1mb bank dump itself and load a bios in the second, third, or fourth 256k?

I'm a total noob when it comes to the logistics of BIOS, but it would be quite cool to have a 1mb bios setup with this modified BIOS in the first 256, a stock MS BIOS in the second, and a hacked (X2 or whatever) in the third thus allowing for a multi-boot and possibly 'live-safe' mod chip installation.  Hell, even if it isn't live-safe, it'd be nice to be able to load Linux, or boot to a hacked BIOS / Load a dashboard with no switches.

It is more work than worth while to most people.
I doubt you'll find anyone with the skill to do it who actually wants to.

It has been talked about before, I just don't remember where.  jester.gif

I'm sure it's not a very easy task, but with all the different folks working on various custom Cromwell efforts, I thought I'd throw it back out there.

Maybe someone from TeamXecuter would like to take a crack at it? wink.gif
