It's true, the x1 isn't updateable (at least not as easily as chips are these days).  If you really wanted to update it and have access to a special programmer and quite good soldering skills, then bioses are available (they are the encrypted x1 ones you might find on ftp servers).  However, I would suggest going for an x2 pro instead.
