Hot Swap

i'm trying to hot swap my drive.  I'm getting an error that does not allow me to boot anything (its an umodded box).  i pull the ide cable as soon as i see the white M$ logo appear under the xbox logo, sometimes it stays on that screen and sometimes it goes to the error screen.  either way i cant get my computer to recognize it.  it will recognize it if i plug in the power from the computer though but not when its getting the power from the xbox.  just out of curiosity i tried power from another box and still the same thing.  am i doin something wrong.  also if you can, can someone give me step by step on how to hot swap.  did a search but nothing

okay i got it to recognize it but i still need a walkthrough if possible for how to hot swap.  also is it true you can't hot swap an unmodded drive or unmodded box.  my drive has some of the 007 exploit. i was in the middle of it and it froze when i was ftping the bert and ernie files.  so when i restarted it, it gave me the error screen. it says 21.
