Hard Drive Password
« on: November 03, 2003, 04:33:00 AM »

ok i got this long ass password from my harddrive.  i have a locked harddrive that i need to unlock because i keep getting an error 13 with it in.  i think i ruined the files for the dashboard.  i dont have any backup and a game will not boot. neither will slayer boot disk.  The password i got from the drive was from config magic, i booted my modded xbox then when i started config magic i swapped drives and all the info changed to the locked one and i copied the password down.  i tried to unlock from there but it said it can't unlock it.  the password i got is 40 digits long.  what other ways can i probably get around this problem.  i have a xbox that is flashed and a 120 gb harddrive.  please help

If you are getting an error 13, do NOT mess with locking and unlocking your HDD. This is a very risky task and can render your 120GB useless very easily.

Error 13 just means the dash couldn't be loaded. It's error 6 that makes you worry about HDD locking.

So, you should be able to boot a game or Evox boot CD if you're just getting error code 13. Once you do that, copy the right files to C and you should get either EvoX or the MS dash to load.

its not letting anything boot.  its a stock hard drive i wasn't able to get the 120 because the stock one froze. i have no mod chip or nothing but i do have another box that works with a flashed bios, just in case i can use that one to fix it.

Oh ok, I didn't realize that the Xbox wasn't modified. Well true, it won't boot. Hmmm, if that drive is locked, it needs to be unlocked before you can put it into another box. You can attempt to use that key to unlock it with your PC using HDUNLOCK.EXE after booting from a boot floppy, but...the method you used to obtain the key is most likely unreliable and you will most likely not succeed in unlocking the drive.

The only way I can think of that would possibly save you is if you have a backup of the eeprom.bin from the unmodded Xbox. If you do, you could flash the eeprom on your modded Xbox to match the unmodded one, and then it would accept the drive, allowing you to boot to a CDRW etc, and then you could recover the drive's data and put it back in the unmodded box.

Basically, you're in a pretty unrecoverable situation. I wish you luck.

Cross posted because you did!

Well there are so many things wrong here!

First off I am making an assumption:

You have two boxes, one modded with a chip, the other softmodded (or both could be softmodded, doesn't matter.

Box 1 gets error 13, this box has the locked drive.

Box 2 is modded and working.

You:

1. Took the HD out of box 1.
2. Booted box 2 and started configmagic.
3. Hotswapped.
4. Looked at the key Config magic gave you.
5. Tried to unlock the drive.

If this is correct then:

At Step 4, Config Magic gave you the password FOR THAT XBOX! The password is unique to the Xbox/HD pair, so the code generated by another xbox WILL NOT unlock a locked drive. Only a code generated with THAT HD and the EEPROM of the xbox it belongs in will give you a proper code.

Step 5 was a real bad choice, though this shouldn't cause any problems, I wouldn't suggest throwing random codes at the drive!

Here are my suggestions:
1. Throw away the code you have, it's useless!
2. If you backed up the eeprom/bin you should be able to use liveinfo to get the drive code. If you didn't your only choice is to hotswap!

If you have to hotswap:
1. Boot your pc up to the point that the BIOS says it's detecting the drives and hit the pause button.
2. Boot the xbox, when the little white MS appears under the X, the drive is unlocked, so swap the cable.
3. Hit the space bar on your PC.

Try different timings of the above until the drive is unlocked, you can usually tell by the size reported by the BIOS, if it is not right, the drive is still locked.

Once the drive is unlocked, repair whatever the damage is, restore your backup (You did make one right?), or whatever.

I still think flashing the modded Xbox's eeprom with the unmodded Xbox's eeprom.bin backup would be easier Mordenkainen. Then he could just boot the box up with a CDRW and wouldn't get error codes about the drive's dash. Then, he could setup what he needs to on C, and then put it back in the unmodded Xbox.

If you try this, make sure you unlock the current drive you use in the modded Xbox, if it's locked. This way, you can still use it in the modded Xbox after you flash the eeprom to match the unmodded one.
