Are Softmods Useless Now?
« on: October 27, 2003, 10:22:00 AM »

I visit this site prob 10 times a week.  I have a softmodded xbox for about 3months now.  All the ppl that said that you could not play Matrix, etc were wrong.  I never had any issues playing any of these games off my hdd.

Now this Digitalman42 starts this thread saying that Crimson skies will not work and that all games from here on in will not work with  a softmodded xbox.  Is this true???

Now...the only rule I have for responding to this message is that Digitalman NOT post any messages.  You (Digitalman) have your own thread started dude and you have already expressed your opinion as to how right you THINK you are.  I would prefer to get more input from ppl that actually take full advantage of their modded boxes.  You making fun of the dude for saying that he was happy being able to play movies, etc from his box was the topper for me.  You obviously have not one clue at how much fun you can have with your box outside of xbox only games.  I have tons of emulators, tons of movies, every episode of simpsons and all the music I could ever want to listen to on my box.  In fact I use my box 85% of the time NOT to play xbox games.  Of the 15 games I have on my hdd I might play 1 or 2 every couple of weeks..outside of that my xbox is mine and my friends Complete Media Center and I would have it no other way.

Again..all you super intelligent xbox ppl pls post some thoughts in here free of the ramblings of Digitalman

Well I haven't had a chance to test it my self but I plan to as soon as I can get my hands on a copy.
But the way I see it is this. Lets say for argument sake that he is right. And that this is some kind of new soft mod protection. Wouldn't it only be a matter of time before it's cracked? I mean if moded boxes can run it fine then wouldn't a new build of PBL with updated bios fix it?

I don't think it's anything to worry about. Chances are it's just a fluke.

P.S.
My xbox also spends the least amount of time playing xbox games. I have about 30 xbox games on mine but I spend most of my time in xbox media center or one of my many emulators.
If this does spell doom and gloom for the soft mod I will keep this box as a media center and get a new one with a chip. Hell I was planing on doing that anyway...I have a few case ideas for those funky Dew boxes. heh

I've heard that if you upgrade to EvoX 3921 you're all right.  My friend upgraded his and he can play Crimson Skies without any problem.  So who knows.  Just mess around with it, that's how we got the softmod in the first place.

Ok, well I went out and rented the game about 15min ago.  Put it in the drive and it booted up without any problem.  Have been playing it ever since and I am in mission 2 as we speak.  So this shoots down the theory of Digitalman that the game can not be played with even the Original.  Next step is to transfer it to the hdd and try it from there.  Even if it does not work then I am positive that there will be a crack or a bios upgrade that will get around this issue.

I guess Digitalman also does not listen well as he already posted a response when he clearly was asked not to.  That is fine, I am not trying to start a war with anyone.  But my question to you is how is it that I am playing the game fine from the original?? Is that not flying right in the face of your original post??

This time I would like you to post a response as I am curious how you will explain your assumptions.  Oh yes btw I do not own a modchip, my box is softmodded and will remain that way.

after pbl loaded the bios there's no difference between a hard- and a softmodded xbox. the only thing they could check are the hacked fonts or st.db file but that would be cracked with a new bios in minutes

First off, you dont control the public forums, if someone is talking about me im going to reply to it.  Second, im just as frustrated as you guys it sucks and I just wanted everyone to know I have my xbox currently soft modded and I do have a matrix laying around.  I would rather not have to put it back in, theres always that slight chance it can screw your D0 up.  I dont know one person who got this game to work correctly with a softmod, if you say you did, you are the first.  Why is it working for so many with mod chips and one with a softmod?? no reason to argue here guys im just trying to figure out whats going on.  Im really po'd that I buy my games, but like to run them off the HD because they load 5 times faster and I dont have to keep taking my games in and out of my xbox dvd player.  What fonts are you using, and are you using EvoX or Avalaunch?

If you had read my post correctly then you would have seen that I said that the game works when the orginal is in the dvd drive.  If you load up phoenix signed bios 1st and try to play it thru that then it is a no go.  If you however just boot your xbox with CS in the drive then it works fine.  I like you and countless others can NOT get the game to run off the HD.  I find it weird that it would even bother you IF you own the game like you said.  I tried it on 3 diff boxes so far tonight (all soft modded with various font hacks) and none of them work.  However everyone of them does work fine if you turn on your xbox with the game in the dvd..it does not even show you the PB screen, it just boots right into CS.  So if you own the game then you have NO worries.

I have seen Lestat and many others talking about a fixed xbe that would solve the problems.  If this is the case then if someone would be so kind to point us all in the direction of a working xbe then everyone will be happy.

i havent got this crimson skies game my friend downloaded it and it is working fine for him he was actually playing it on xlink messenger earlier.

It has nothing to do with the softmod exploits.  The problem is related to either Phoenix Bios Loader, or BFM bioses in general.
I have the same problems the OP was reporting and I've got an Xecutor 1 installed, but use Phoenix Bios Loader to load up the new bioses (since my modchip isn't flashable.)

That's because, if I am not mistaken, the xbox DVD drive boots before the HD. So really all this means is this game for one reason or another is harder to steal than the rest.
Nothing to freak out over. But I'll admit. I would like to see this fixed and put to rest.

if you have the font exploit and you put a game in the drive and turn your xbox on it should allways just reboot as far as i knwo there is no fix for that with the font exploit it has nothing to do with the crimson skies

just be patient i heard all this before with other games pretty soon your all gonna look pretty dumb when we get a workaround like with ETM and conflict desert storm 2

everytime ms fix a game not to boot there will be afix its just software guys it can be hacked its just a game.
