How To Add My Games To Xbmp?
« on: January 20, 2004, 10:42:00 PM »

Congrats on getting your box.

To make XBMP your dash
Go here and select "how to":

http://www.xbmp.de/

Also try reading the "pinned" manual.

I don't use it as a dash I stick with evolutionX and run it as a app.

I will get back to you on keeping evolutionX and booting XBMP on start up if that's possible.

Update:
Goto Dashboards forum under "Other Dashboards" and checkout X-select topic. I may be what you're looking for.

To setup XBMP as a dash, you have to put a copy f the XBMP .XBE onto the C:, rename it to something your BIOS will boot (or mod your BIOS with XBTools), then create a shortcut on C: entitled XBOX Media Player.cut that will point to the other XBMP XBE on the other drive (E:, F: or G:).

It is very easy to launch EVOX, or any app from XBMP. Personally, I have menu items on the left-side panel that include Dashboards, Operating Systems, Emulators, and Applications. If you click on any of these, the appropriate XBE are displayed.

The unfortunate thing is, to have full control over the My Programs menu system, you have to create a .cut shortcut for every executable and place them in an appropriately named folder. It's time consuming, but I think it's worth it!

QUOTE (Agrajag @ Jan 22 2004, 12:41 PM)
Guys,

Does this mean if I use this as the DASH that DVD2XBOX will not send ripped games to the right folder or is that configurable?

I'm also trying to figure out how to get streaming going but may have complicated issues. I setup the XBOX with a static IP of 192.168.1.23.

I notice all the shares in config.xml point to 192.168.1.2. I suspect these need to be changed to .23. Yes?

Also, shoutcast. Where do you get the stream details? I go to Shoutcast.com and cannot find the data needed to add the stations I want.

1) DVD2XBOX, and all your other apps, will work the exact same as they always did.

2)You're going to need to change the config.xml file quite a bit. You need to configer your shares based on your PC's IP address and the directories that you're sharing, and to customize your My Programs menus.

3)Look up a program called ShoutScraper. This program runs on yur computer as a service. It scrapes shoutcast.com for the top 20 stream for each of a number of configurable genres at specified times. It will then put .sc stream files into a set directory on your computer, and you can set up a share in My Music to access those files.

WARNING: ShoutCast.com will ban you for the day if you scrap to many streams from the site. I think it's ~600, but I'm not sure. I'm still trying to configure it so I don't get banned everyday.

Here is my config.xml file. Everything configured in it, including My Programs, shortcuts, RelaX shares, and ShoutScraper is operationable, so use it as a reference.

Also take note that I have mapped RelaX shares to my PC's DVD-ROM and CD-ROM. This is helpful for when the xbox DVD-ROM doesn't want to read a disc (CD-Rs, DVD-RWs, etc.) In fact, I have a couple of damaged DVDs that I watch on my XBOX through my PC's DVD-ROM because the xbox's DVD drive can't handle them. ReLaX is a great thing!

By the way, if XBMP won't boot, go into the MS dashboard and erase the gamesave associated with XBMP. That should solve your problem.

Edit: X-S took all of the backslashes out of the file, so you'll have to replacce them yourself if you're going to use this file.  they are mostly in the file paths.

How To Add My Games To Xbmp?
« Reply #4 on: January 22, 2004, 03:38:00 PM »

If you want the shortcuts to work properly in My Programs, your file structure should look like this:

$HOME$/XBMP/Shortcuts
--------Dashboards
--------Applications
--------Emulators
--------OS

To make the shortcuts, I would take a pre-existing shortcut, such as the DVD player.cut file in the XBMP folder, and modify it to reflect the path of the application. Then rename it to the name you want to show up in your menu. If you try to write them from scratch, I found they don't seem to work.

If you want the menu items to have icons, find icons and resize them to ~ 64px X 64px. Then rename the jpg, png, bmp or whatever it is to share the same name as the shortcut and have a tbn file extension, and place it the Thumbnails forlder (or the folder of the .cut file)

Therefore,

DVD2XBOX.cut  <----->  DVD2XBOX.tbn
Halo.cut <--------------> Halo.tbn

QUOTE (Agrajag @ Jan 23 2004, 12:52 AM)
Thanks a ton Joseph. Deleting the saved game did it and your file pretty much got me everything else I want for now. MUCH appreciated.

Was getting a bit impatient. So much to digest and while the info is out there, it's spread all over the place and rarely in one location.

Right now I'm trying to figure out how to get HDTV resolutions to work. There's the <resolution> tag in the config.xml but setting it to 7 does nothing. Playing with the resolutions in Settings/Video is what caused the lockup.

Found out you can turn up the resolution of Goom but anything above the default makes it run pretty slowly though 480x480 isn't bad.

Also had a side effect of getting my games to show up in XBMP. In Evox all the games showed up as expected. In XBMP I ended up seeing MORE games as several games have bonus games in them, like Prince of Persia have all 3 versions ever done.

Now I have the long tast of transfering about 1500 WAV files to the XBOX. <grin> I'm only getting about 13Mb even on this 54Mb wireless router and access point so it'll take a while.

And the 42-character file limit is a real nightmare. The developers really should have an option for showing files based on ID3 tag info and forget the filename. Then you wouldn't see the file extension and your name can be what you want, with any characters and well over 42 characters. Maybe for XBMC some day.

Im not lucky enough to own an HDTV, so Im not sure, but I believe you have to set the widescreen tag to true in skin.xml. that may solve your problem. Also you may want to change the aspect ratio in the GUI settings from 4:3 to 15:9 (or something like that).

As for your games, if you want to keep your My Programs as clean and neat as possible, I would suggest creating a .cut file for each of your games and placing them in a folder. You can rename the OS folder to Games. It can be time consuming, but at least you'll get only the XBEs you want you want in there without all the demos and sh!t.

Why are you transferring all those WMAs over to the XBOX? Unless you want them for in-game soundtracks, I would just set up a share to your computer. They stream over just as well as if they were on your XBOX. If you really want them on there, I would suggest using a program called Soundtrack Editor. It lets you organize, add, delete, rename, etc. all of your soundtracks and songs from your computer. As long as you can establish a FTP, it will send all the changes to your XBOX auotmatically. It beats having to name all the songs with your controller too wink.gif . That program is not illegal, so you candownload it right from the Tools page of XBOX-Scene.

QUOTE (Agrajag @ Jan 23 2004, 02:46 AM)
I have the 16x9 setting changed but didn't know about the skin.xml change. I'll check into that next. I did find it and it was a little confusing as it appears to show every resolution possible.

What benefit does the cut file really provide for the games? How is it cleaner? I like the idea that things are simple now. I rip with DVD2XBOX and, presto, there's the game. Clean-up now and then, if it's worth it, isn't a big deal. And I see what you mean about demos if I run into a lot of them.

I'm transferring the music files because my PC is often turned off. My wife and I are old farts. We don't like the idea of having 4 devices on to play music (PC, XBOX, TV, Receiver). That just seems extremely excessive. That's the reason I want this way and not with the Tivo solution or some other streaming-only solution. I want a Media Center in my AV Center, not the PC in another room. I'll check out Soundtrack Editor immediately. The only hardship I have right now is the 42 character limit. I just am in shock that no one thought to overcome it by making it a non-issue with the use of ID3 tag display.

BTW, are the other Visualizations available beside what you get with XBMP or is Goom and the Analyzer about it?

Lastly, I think I want to give XBMC a shot just to keep up on how it's progressing. Can someone PM or e-mail me to give me a clue as to where to find it?

The .cut files would be cleaner because instead of My Programs pointing to all of your XBEs, it points to the .cut files that you specifically made. It isn't an automated system by far, but you have full control over your menus. I don't rip games to the hard drive so it's not a problem for me. you might want to keep it simple, even if you do have to sort through a few demos.

XBMP does support ID3 tags. Look in the settings under music settings. Also, if you hit 'Info' on your controller it will search the CDDA database for editional info and display it to a dialogue box, but only if you have a working internet connection on your XBOX.

Those are the only two visualizations for XBMP. The guys at http://www.xboxmediacenter.de  are having a contest to encourage people to design more visualizations for XBMC. I'm sure once they get implemented in XBMC, they will be thrown on XBMP as well.

As for XBMC, I have just recently installed the newest build on my XBOX. You can find it in the same place as XBMP, or try #xbins on EFnet.  I have not got a chance to test it yet (I haven't even editied config.xml), but it does look promising. It implements a media database so you can manage your songs better. A database can let you sort music and search based on specific criteria.  As of right now, I am probably going to stick with XBMP as my primary dashboard/media player.  It has proven itself to me. XBMC has just recently been able to act as a dashboard in its last build.  I think it needs somemore time to mature. Once they come with version 1.0, I may take it seriously, but for now...I'm sticking to the good ol' XBMP. Tried, tested , and true!

I have only use the 'info' button on the DVD controller, but Im sure it's on the gamepad as weel. Take a look at the XBMP 2.4+ manual. It has a full keymap listing.

As for EvoX, if you go into config.xml and set the absolute path of your evoxdash, XBMP will boot it everytime you press the little orange button on the 'Home' screen (right next to the red button that powers off your xbox). Personally, I have MXM there. I use it as my primary FTP server, and that button makes it very accessable.

I would also put an app on called boXplorer. It is a file management program. As long as you can launch boXplorer, you can gho through your files and launch any XBE manually. That way you'll never find yourself in a dead end if you mess up the menus or something. And boXplorer lets you rename, move, and delete files as well.

The manual says the White button, under Navigation, displays IMDb information. Since that's Internet MOVIE Database, that's why I paid no attention to it for my music files. I'll give it a shot.

In XBMP's config.xml which tag gets the absolute path of evodash (I assume we're talking the default.xbe, but could be wrong).

boXplorer I've seen commented on and do plan to grab it.

I just grabbed XBMC, a couple emulators and such and will go back and grab that next time out.

Joseph, one other thing. I keep seeing people mentioning new codes and such as if XBMP will be able to do more than what its last build handled. I'd LOVE to get lossless audio codecs going. Is that just not going to happen in XBMP?

This is the set of tags to specify the dashboard in config.xml.

<dashboard>evoxdash.xbe</dashboard>

It doesn't have to be the default dashboard that boots (I assume XBMP boots for you). It doesn't need an absolute path as it asssumes the root of the C partition. So put whatever you called the evox XBE between the tags and it will boot when you hit that little button on the 'home' screen.

What have you heard about boXplorer?? People aren't talking sh!t about it, are they? boXplorer is a great file manager. If people are saying it's bad, it is only because it doesn't support DVD/game ripping to the hard drive like DVD2XBOX and boxTools.

I have never heard of the lossless codec. But, there is a chance it can be implemented in a future release of XBMP. However, XBMP's system development lifecycle is slowly but surely coming to an end to make way for XBMC so releases are becoming a lot less frequent. Let's cross our fingers!

I found that tag and got that part working. Now I need to tackle full replacement. Can XBMP be the dash while most of it stays installed on my F: partition or must it all be moved over to C: ?

On boXplorer I've heard on good things with people recommending it. I also have DVD2XBOX so I have ripping covered.

As far as lossless codecs, they're pretty popular now. The big formats are FLAC, APE and WMA9 Lossless (from MS and what all my files are in on my PC). The benefit is that they all support ID3 tags, provide roughly 40-45% compression but playback 100% accurate output. Thus they are perfectly archived copies of your music. They're nowhere near as small as MP3's and such but in my case I like them because they serve as backups for my CD's.

And any XBMP releases would be a good thing as I was under the impression that as of October there would be no more releases given all the emphasis in XBMC. XBMC is getting closer for me as it now has two things I wanted, visualizations and Playlist support, but both are early and have issues.
