I could be wrong but I don't thing the XBMP has a cd player built in. It uses the MS system cd player.
You could rip them to mp3, burn the mp3 files to a cd-rw disk done in UDF format <or ftp to hd>, and play.

Yes, as long as it's on a cd-rw and done in XBox Iso compadible format or UDF format.

xbmp added cdda support i believe sometime after the last complex release (in june sometime). with the later versions you just need to add:
<share>
<name>CDDA</name>
<url>cdda:</url>
</share>
to the music section of your config file. if you want xbmp to play your cd's you need to make sure that the autolaunchcd is set to false (set to true would autolaunch the m$ dash by default to play your cd). you can also turn on the cddb lookup. this will automatically grab cd info (i.e. artist/title) and display it while it plays in xbmp. look for these sections in the config file:
<autolaunchcdda>false</autolaunchcdda>
<cddaplayer>c:xboxdash.xbe</cddaplayer>
<usecddb>true</usecddb>
that should do it. i'm running the latest cvs release 9/11 and it works for me, although i must admit i have only used it a few times. i never really play cds anymore. old school...
