Network Connection Progress Bar?

Is it possible to see a kind of progress bar when there is a long over th enetwork download. For example my MP3 directory is on another machine and it does contain a big number of subdirectories. The media player does take a lot of time to download the top directory but while this happens there is no indication that it is still working. FOr a number of times I thought it crashed and trid to reset it.
