technically yes it would be possible, but it would definitely not be an easy adition. besides if you have usb then just hook up the keyboard, load linux of some type and use the usb hd compatability in that.  gentoox has a media player and ability for usb hds im sure of it

I know that linux can do it, but the problem is that not everybody knows how to operate linux, and it would be much easier if u could just plug it in your xbox and use media player.

Ok to start im very stupid..  blink.gif
Just brain storming..  rotfl.gif

The only thing thats ive wondered is the the xbox memory cards are like thumb drives... that X key thing is a thumb drive.. and they a maped as a drive letter if im not mistaken.. right? My memcard is mapped to H on the top slot and I on the bottom slot of my controller.. but you cant see anything on it .. nor write to it.. but its there

So why cant that memery card be like 100GB.. ?

usb is suppose to work on any usb compatable device .. well kinda mainly HD, keyboards, mice, ect..

has anyone tried hookin one up..  prolly

It just doesnt seem to complicated..  but i dont know anything about usb and from what ive heard programing usb shit is not an easy task..

The hardest part (and only real thing left to do, I think) is to make the the Xbox reconize the FAT32/NTFS drives through the USB port.

I think it is very possible.

XBMP can read non-Xbox optical media, can FTP, and can stream media from your PC. All of which are acessing another file system.

So why isn't it there?

I'm not the most technical guy in the world, so take this with a grain of salt.

But, if I'm not mistaken, USB is just an interface to a device, it still needs driver support on the system side of it to understand how to "interface" with whatever the USB device is.  So, just because it has a USB port doesn't mean that you can plug your digital camera into it just because the Keyboard works.  The difference is that the box has KB drivers.

Peace.

jinx_removing :

I understand that and its true.. but some devices have the drives build-in .. to the device

But here's my main brain-fart.. USB thumb drive ?
Plug it in and you can get like the game exploits, saves, i think even mp3.. On a non hack xbox also..

BTW im not try to say i know everything, that anyone already knows just throwing ideas..

I was reacting to a similar post somewhere else in this forum. Seems to me indeed that XBMP should be able to do it. I've plugged in my external USB HDD, it's rotating but nothing else happens, no drive letter or anything. I've also plugged in a 128MB memory USB thingy and it shows up as I: but is unaccessible until MS Dashboard formats it for you as XFAT, after which it's incompatible with your PC  blink.gif

Of course, I'm pretty sure there's a XFAT viewer on the PC (read about it somewhere), but it would be nicer if evox and/or xbmp would support FAT(32). xbmp is indeed doing its own ISO9660 stuff for CD's and FAT32 should therefore be possible.

Another point: most USB devices don't need drivers because they implement some general category like "storage device" or "human interface device". I'm hoping that both my USB HDD and memory key are similar in this respect in that they both are USB "storage device"s.

An XFAT viewer for the PC is what allows the X key to be read by your PC, ---=Snyper=---.

So we all agree that it should be possible in XBMP, so where the heck is our resident XBMP staff?

1: Using as a "memorycard" would work if you format it as a FATX drive. It would then not be possible to hook it to the computor without a new format.

2: Anyone feel up to makeing FAT16/32 and NTFS/NTFS5.0 work flawlessly on the xbox just give us a shout. (See it as making a FATX disk working in windows)

3: USB 1 is 12mb/s = 1.5Mb/s. Who wanna take on all the "noobs" that complain that their svcd´s ac3 divx etc etc lag and demand that it is fixed and still dont get that the MAXIMUM transfer speed is 1.5Mb/s?

4: Is there realy a need for this now when there is LBA48 support for the XBox in general? (Needs to be implemented into XBMP and alot of homebrew software. Avalaunch and Evo-X already have +137Gb support)

5: Has anyone thought that the XBox was never ment to have support for ANY USB devices, so why would M$ put generic drivers for that into the XBox?

6: And do not say Linux has support so why not XBMP. Ofcourse Linux has support, it is a COMPLETE OS. (Actually i do not know if any linux distro has usb storgae support for sure, but as gentoox now supports usb burners i guess they have support for usb hdds)

And what the hell is this?!

"So we all agree that it should be possible in XBMP, so where the heck is our resident XBMP staff?"

Again, sorry if i sound pissed off (but i almost am), but get off your ass and code it yourself if it is that easy!

That is a statement on the lack of responce on such I highly demanded feature. It apprears that all the XBMP team seems to care about is useless crap. The team is on the verge of making the one and only, best for everything, app yet all we get is crap. The bigest thing we've seen from them is that stupid server feature, which makes no sense and it doesn't even work right (not to mention that TV guide crap). Yes, it is a Media Player, so why not concentrate on getting more media to play back and for it to play better. If more compatible media is takeing awhile, then it's on to more ways to access the egisting compatible media: USB harddrives (that's all I can see that it's lacking since we have network streaming and access to just about all optical media).

As for doing it myself: it's not that hard to take egisting code and make it apply to something else. Even I can do that.

Maybe I'm just too cheap and lazy, but I don't want to have to go buy media and have to take the time transfering the data from the drive to the disc (or to the Xbox via FTP). I've got over a tarabyte of media on harddrives (all of which can be made USB).

I'll tell you what: you pay for all the optical media for my data and I'll think about codeing some USB support!

Yes there has been some weird shit that was added to XBMP.. but the TV Guide was suppose to be expanded to do other stuff but just didnt happen cause of no TV-in.. But still it wasnt a waste..
The webserver.. well its kinda stupid, but I use it.. watching TechTV and playing some mp3.. with out having to switch to my xbox screen..
And yes I do think the Dev team should fix the small thing that have not been fixed.. goom, pic veiwer, proformance tweaks..ect the little stuff .. before putting a bounch of new junk (junk in a good way) in..
But i cant knock the Dev team they have done some nice work.. i mean fuck set back and look at it... XBMP it awsome..

I dont get it.. sorry

"you have a tarabyte of data on Harddrives that can be made USB".. you will code some USB support IF i/we buy you optical media.. ie CD-r, DVD - +R RW

i dont get it.. just write USB support and then take on of you HD make it USB then hook it to your xbox.. why do you need i/us to buy you cd media or new HDs...?

If you need any help writing it let me know.. ill do my best to help

Looking back, yea it kind of doesn't make sinse. I guess it was more soposed to be "pay for the media and I'll give you the code". I just really don't have the time to sit and code, otherwise I just might do it.

And yea I guess I shouldn't rag the whole team. Some of them just need to learn some customer relations.

Seopy, you're right lag wouldn't be a real issue unless you have a really encoded file (like say a hour and a half in under 300 MB).

What we really should do is get the XBMP team and the other teams (like the DVD2Xbox team) together so that we can empliment USB file transfers as well.

@AnimeCommander; you're being an a**hole, if you don't realize that then you're even a bigger a**hole.

If could really code it yourself you would not make such stupid statements. Come on, prove me wrong!

For f**ks sake. The last time i checked XBMP was being developed by unpaid developers and being given free to the community. XBMP as it is today is an awesome piece of code that does pretty much everything you would want in a commercial media center and yet you want them to take your advice to implement a feature that you say ithat you could easily develop but do not have the time ...puhlease.... just go back to playing with yourself and leave the developers alone. Its folks like you who do not realise the enormous amount of time required to build a product that piss off developers.
