The problem with this type of feature is it's a pain in the neck to do well.

If you've only one file on a disc there is no problem. However most people will have a few different files on a disc and possibly combinations of say mp3/ogg/divx files. How do you get xbmp to pick which files to play?

One solution is to write a file onto the dvdr/cdr telling xbmp which ones to auto play. However this is not very helpful since most people are using xbmp to play archived material which they already have backed up. Hence why ISO9660 compatability was the most requested feature.

Considering how easy it is to just select the files you want to play (I mean really even my wife can use a remote) and how little time the devs currently have to put towards the project, I doubt very much we'll see this any time soon.

However if you want to request the feature post in the relevant forum on the official xbmp forums. They have one dedicated to feature requests. Plus you could post a request on xbmp's sourceforge project site.

My own solution would be:
If  (there is one file)
play it.
Else
just display the directory so user chooses what to do.
OR alternatively if there is more than one file OR no known file then do nothing.

There are two options here.

One,  Implent it yourself since it is open source
Two,  Get a smarter wife.

XBPlayer Build 4 by Runtime, 070304Q & T-Money
Is a Old Stand Alone Semi-AutoPlay DivX and VideoCD Player.
(One of the first iterations of what became XBMP)

It simply loads up from disk and produces a list of Video files it finds on the DVD/CDR.
Its limited in its abilities in that it only has Start and Stop Play functions from what I can tell.

I have used it with fair results.
If the Video Files are standard formats it seems to have no problems.
To test I made a DVD with a hi-res avi backup that I made of DareDevil (about 1.6 gigs in size)
and it played without issue.

Like I said its from some of the same authors that help produce XBMP today.

It would be very cool if they could renew the project
and add Pause, FWD, RWD and Remote control support.

I want to create stand alone VIDEOCD and DIVX movies that
I can easily put into -any- modded Xbox that will play
without having XBMP installed.
Sure I could put XBMP on the root of the Media along with
the Movies but there is always save file conflicts with newer versions of XBMP.
Again just a request.

I am not asking to go back.
Just a single one time stand alone release of a stripped down version.

The thing is it's nowhere near that simple.

You could take the xbmp code and create a stripped down version but you'd still have to add code to get it to work and do do what you wanted. You'd have to bug fix it and update whenever a new version of ffmpeg or xvid were released just like xbmp.

So your not really asking for a feature request your really talking about a new project, albeit one on a smaller scale.

But hey xbmp is opensource so you never know if the demand was there it could be done. It's just never going to be done by the xbmp dev team, they have their hands full already.

Having said all this you will at some point in the future be able to use xbmp v2.x from disc as there are solutions being looked at to avoid problems with the system.bin and other config files in the temp dirs.
