Sounds interesting, but if this thing remaps "0" and "Select" on the remote, what happens when you actually need to use those buttons?

Anybody?

yeah good question !!!

on a sidenote i believe MICR0S0FT were going to release the remote with diffrent firmware that would turn the box on and off using the display button

i opened up the remote and on the pcb where the display button is it says PWR

The XBox DVD remote actually turns my RCA DVD player on and off using the Display button, so that's probably why the PCB says PWR.

ya, all it is, is an RCA remote for xbox.  You can find an RCA remote at Kmart with the exact same buttons and same exact same shape.

You should read the doorbell tutorial.  It's much simpler and cheaper.

Some applications might use 0 (like the TV Guide) and that could be really irritating. A good solution would be to still use 0 but you have to hold it down for say 3 sec. That would be safer as well as you wouldn't turn it off by mistake.

I believe there are issues with this solution.  In the IR world there are so many variables in signal reception that it is impossible to determine a hold vs. a press.  They looked into it before.
