Can't Ftp - Unusual Error Msg
« on: October 26, 2004, 04:55:00 AM »

Hi. Trying to ftp for first time. Have avalaunch on xbox. Crossover cable and 10/100 network card in pc - not interested in connecting to 'net, just xbox to pc.
The pc sees the xbox when it powers up, ie the lan connection goes live.
I have set various different ip addresses for my xbox using the avalaunch settings menu, and matched them each time in the pc - to no avail. keep getting the msgs:
language text missing : 65 : connect timed out
language text missing : 76

Never networked before. Can't find anything on the tut's I've seen. Using qwix to try to ftp, but it's the pc  ( win xp) that gives the msgs.
Have also tried using internet explorer to ftp, same msgs.
My xp firewall is off.
Any ideas?
Cheers!!
user/pass are xbox/xbox, and subnet mask 255.255.255.0 .
Have set gateway to blanks as well as the basic ip config ( different tut's are alll telling me to do something different !) but still no joy.
Suspect this is a win xp or pc error, but not sure what to change

do something such as the following

static IP on PC such as 192.168.0.100
static IP on xbox such as 192.168.0.101

notice that the first three set of numbers much be the same and the last set should NOT be the same.

Whenever I connect using a crossover I set my PC static IP to 192.168.0.1 which is the default gateway on xbox and then I set the static IP on xbox to something like 192.168.0.105 and it works everytime.

No, neither of those suggestions worked.
Xbox settings : ftp enabled ( on avalaunch settings menu )
static ip is currently 192.168.0.101  subnet is 255.255.255.0 default gateway is 192.168.0.1
pc settings : manually set ip address is 192.168.0.100  subnet is 255.255.255.0
  default gateway is 192.168.0.1
there are many more settings menus on the pc  - where do I begin!!
qwix setting : passive ftp is disabled.
Please don't suggest any more ip addresses -  I have run thru at least 20 variations.
This is not where the problem lies.
Also, when I firsty put in the network card, xp provided it's own driver. I didn't use the network wizard, just launched qwix and trie dto connect. Yesterday, I ran thru the network wizard. It created a bridged connection ( no idea what this is ). But under network connections, I now have my dialup internet connection, a 1394 connection, a lan connection, and  the new bridged connection. Neither of the last two work, both give the same msg.
I need someone with networking experience to post a reply and explain exactly what the msg means. I can then work from there to resolve it.
Cheers.

Try using FLashxfp, CoreFtp, Cuteftp and just see if you can get it to connect with those ftp apps. If they work then that should help to narrow down the problem.

Change the default gateway on your XBox to 192.168.0.100

OR

Change the static IP on your PC to 192.168.0.1

The default gateway on your Xbox should match the IP of the NIC in your PC.

Also, make sure that DHCP is disabled in the Avalaunch menu.

When using just crossover cable, isn't it necessary to set your computer up to provide DHCP? I think that was the only way I could get it to work for me.

Nope.  I have my XBox connected with just a crossover and enabling DHCP kills my connection.

All working now !!
Thank-you, Thraxen. As soon as I disabled DHCP in the avalaunch settings menu, it kicked into life. I have been told there was a conflict on the network as to who to talk to and how, hence the connect timed out msg while my network dithered over how to talk and to what. By removing the DHCP option of a networked connection, it only used the static IP route thru the crossover cable, and finally started talking with the xbox.
Thanks to all of you for helping!!
