Question? :s
« on: May 09, 2003, 01:38:00 PM »

I have a .avi file on my computer i wish to watch on my x-box...'have previously watched many films on my x-box and they run fine but last night i copied the file to cd(700mb file) and saved it onto my x-box(boxplorer) and then tried to play it off the hard drive(xbmp 2.30). The file played really shotty and kept skipping through the film i fast forwarded it about an hour through the file and it was still skipping and sometimes even freezing for a matter of seconds it was completely unwatchable. I have done this with about 10 or so files even files of worse quality then this play better on my x-box. But the funny thing is it cant be the file because it plays good on my computer. Using a program i found out the required video and audio codecs... XviD MPEG-4 Video Decoder, MPEG Layer-3 Decoder-->Morgan Stream Switcher... im really not sure what is wrong but i thought my x-box was as powerful as my computer(when it come to movies) because all else was as good as my computer if not better. Can someone please help me? Thankyou...

QUOTE (ZechsGX @ May 10 2003, 02:03 AM)
Your computer is probably more powerful than an XBOX... The bitrate of those movies are probably way too high for the XBOX to handle...

No dude the bitrate of the file i am trying to play is 977 kb/s i easily play another file which bitrate is 1118 kb/s so dude you cant be right. By the way what you said about codecs... isnt it possible for the old xvid codec to play the partially as good as the new xvid alpha codec? I made my xbox force the framerate per seconds and that got it not skipping anymore but now the audio is slightly slower then the video but i adjusted to get it almost perfect. But does anyone else have any ideas?

I doubt bitrate itself is the issue as well.
I have many many hi-res avi's and all of them playback with
little issue.

I think it has to do with the encoding method used to create
the file.

You could try playing with all the settings xbmp has to offer.
like turning off second post processing
or
You could run the file through nandub or virtua dub...
using direct stream copy for both audio and video.
This will quickly generate another copy of the video
and has a tendancy to fix minor encoding problems.
It will also sometimes detect problems with the encoded stream when you first load it up.
Giving you an idea of what's wrong.

I highly recommend Gordian Knot when creating avi backups.
I know its not xvid...
but there is very little differnace between xvid and divx3.11a

yeah i have been playing with the settings and i thought by forcing the frame rates per second i increased the quality of the playback i really did not because when i got about 5 minutes into it got really skippy and their voices slowly drifted away from their mouth movements and my xbox started to make sounds like it was loading or something....i dunno im downloading nandub now to check it out.

I said the latest cvs version.

Not a old 041403 or 2.3 complex version with the config.xml missing!

This it what happens when using a "bad" source of the release.

I can not and will never say where to get the latest cvs even if i know.

Ok?

Latest cvs is 070503 atm.

I downloaded the latest version 7th of may cvs build and it still didnt work...plays just as badly as the official release xbmp does. And another thing it does is the file is like letterbox or something(whatever you call it but its only a tiny bit of black at the top and the bottom) and with the cvs build it removes that and stretches the picture out... sad.gif its not cool. Im not sure if there is an option to disable this or something but yeah im still clueless on how to get the file working im currently burning the file to cd again and gonna save it on my xbox(i have ran it through nandub and divfix  blink.gif ) and ill see if it works now but im not sure if it will ill post the results shortly  ph34r.gif .
