Omfg...media Player Is God, It Does Everything!
« on: March 18, 2003, 11:07:00 AM »

OMG...was just playing around w/ Media Player to see if i could get the networking working w/ shared folders from my laptop.

Divx and mp3's worked great...i was happy w/ the results.

Then i wondered if it was possible to share my CDrom drive from the laptop, to play vcd's/svcd's that are on CD-r's (which my philips drive wont play) and it fucking works PERFECT!!!

Xbox is the best thing MS ever made for real!!!

i totally agree.... although i didnt know you could stream vcd's from the drive! would one mind explaining how they set it up?(on your pc. As in what did you add to share? just D: and d represents your dvd drive?)
i agree though.... i use it more than i use my games

using XP, just right click ur optical drive...in my case its a Cdrom drive on my laptop...go to Sharing and Security, and share the drive, thats all.

Then i just edited the SMB share section in the config.xml to reflect the shared directory.

for me its:

smb://mshome/dell/D

       (workgroup/computer/folder)

I love this too.

I can place a DVD containing (S)VCD images in my DVD Drive and just select the ".BIN" in XBMP and it works flawlessly.
Or copy the contents of a DVD movie to my PC-HDD and just stream it.

I'm seriously considering getting a second (barebone) just for mediafiles to use side by side with my xbox.
I'd love to have a small PC with adequate space just for streaming.

My only wish is that they somehow bypass the filename-limitations from the xbox.
I.e. giving files which do not have the proper naming a temp-name in cache (In conjunction with relax).

just edit the share paths with whatever directory you want to share, and all subdirectories will automatically be shared also.

will show up on the xbox just like it does on the PC

there will be a button directly under video's or music or pictures,
it depents on where you put that piece of text in the xml file
there are three categories in the xml file 1.video  2.music  3.pictures
in my case i put it in all the categories so that when i choose video or music or pitures
i can access my HD of my pc
you can use any drive letter you want
( maybe you floppy drive to, i haven't tried that  biggrin.gif  )

Well, I got the shared HD to work. Although I cheated. I loaded relax and selected which folders I wanted to share, then just configured my config.xml file and it worked. One minor problem. Relax will not allow you to share my CD drive. It only allows folders. I even enabled sharing on my CD drive. Is there any special way to configure so I can share my CD drive?

smb://user:12345@Solvision/mokkalaptop/music, the user account "user" must exist on your computer and have the password 12345.

Now, what do I put after the "@"  ?  Obviously the directory. But is it going to be the workgroup name and computer name?

Or will it be something like smb://slayer813:[email protected]/D/Music

Should I use my IP address in there?

Thats the part that confuses me. But even if I get that right I may still have the problem with not seeing the shared drives since I cant do it from another computer.
I may just need to stick with relax since its working

no if you're using SMB sharing, the part to the right of the @ should be as follows:

@workgroup name/computer name/shared folder

for instance my config for SMB shares from my laptop is setup as:

smb://mshome/dell/D

this makes it share the D drive which is the cdrom drive

since you're using relax, you edit the XNS share URL then
