Dvd Movies To Hdd Please Help!

Is there anyway to backup my store bought dvds to the hdd and make it play.  I know you can rip it on your hdd and ftp it over, but can i just copy it to movie folder using xtoolbox?  When i have done this, i try to play it with XBMP and it just freezes.....can anyone help me please!!
