Xbox Doesn't Boot With Chip Off
« on: August 03, 2004, 01:05:00 PM »

I had a problem with the ms dash.  It would not load when I selected it from my evox dash, nor boot up with the chip off.  I fixed half of it. In my evox.ini file, I changed the DVDPlayer, #AudioPlayer, and MSDashBoard lines from "c:\msxboxdash.xbe" to "c:\xboxdash.xbe", and when I select ms dash from evox, or put a movie in, it goes into the ms dash with no problems. However, when I turn the chip off and boot, it gives me the "Your xbox needs service" screen. Any thoughts? I had somebody else chip my box, so I don't have my original C.  Thanks for any help.

jack2004,
In C there is evoxdash.xbe, msxboxdash.xbe, and xboxdash.xbe.  I'm guessing that the xboxdash.xbe is what it should be b/c the orig xbox dash loads when I take the menu from the evox dash.

bronkx1,
I used a Slayer auto installer 2.5 dvd, and took the option to lock the HD, but it still would not boot with the chip off.

Thanks again guys.

i think you replaced the M$ dash.  you could use an auto installer an click rebuild harddrive to retail..........that would fix things(but it would delete all your stuff so you have to make the decission)

These instructions might help....

You don't want to loose any data unless it's a last resort.

Before you do any of that,
Take a look at the top left of the error screen.
what error number do you get?

Snowboard8422,
Yes I did replace the dash when I first had the problem using the Slayer auto install disk.  It didn't work until I changed the evox.ini file though.

Scaramanga,
There is no error code in the top left.  I know what you're talking about, that's what I was getting before I edited the ini file.  It just says your xbox requires service in a bunch of languages.

b-gates,
Thanks, I'll give that a try this weekend.

Also, what is the kernel of your tsop bios..  It might be tough to find out if you don't already know it, but the dashboard from Slayers is too old to run on kernels 5530 and above (I think).
