Help With Dual Boot
« on: April 08, 2005, 12:49:00 AM »

Okay i have a 1.0 with a 1 mb bios of 4981.06 right now. I want to add a switch so i can use this mobo for live. Heres the questions.

Can i make the custom bios and flash it before i install the switch? I figure it wont boot properly afterwards untill i add the switch. But thats not a problem. Or do i have to have the switch in place before i flash it? If i do what way should it be switched, towards the  VCC connection or away?

The bios im planning on making would be

256k- 3944/bank one
256k- 3944/bank two
256k- 4981.06/bank three
256k- 4981.06/bank four

Im using kernal 3944 because that is what is indicated on the factory HD that came with the system.

Next question. I saw the picture in lordvaders sig that shows a 2 and 4 way switch. Am i correct in assuming i simply need to use the single switch, wiring it to 3.3v (vcc) , A19, and ground it on any screw point. Can i ground it directly to the LPC ground?

Sorry to ask all the questions but I have only done about 10 TSOP's and this is the first one with a switch. I generally just chip systems but im trying to learn more about TSOPing.

Thanks,
Sapper

You can do either.  You can flash a custom bios (half and half) before putting the switch in, or fit the switch and then flash one half.  However, personally i usually fit the switch and then flash a bios.  Which means if the flash fails, you can flip the switch to boot your xbox, flip it back and re-flash and fix.

You can place either bios, on either side of the switch.  Again, it makes no difference.  I would suggest placing the bios you think you will use less often, on the Vcc side of the switch.  Applying Vcc to A19 causes a little more heat to be created in the MCPX.  Some people suggest cutting the track back to the MCPX.  I have just placed a small heatsink on mine.  Its been running like that for at least 18 months now.  Also try using 3.3v first, if that doesn't work, try 5v.

The ground connections you refer to are all the same.  You can use any.

I am no expert in original bios' versions.  However if you put the switch in before flashing your bios, you can always do the switch - boot - switch triack again.  I think there is a list on the main site, or perhaps in the bios forums.

Obviously, when loading an original bios, you will need to have your hard drive locked, or you will get an error.

I hope that helps.
