What Did I Do Wrong?
« on: October 18, 2004, 05:42:00 AM »

OK 1st off, I've done plenty of TSOP's but never used switch's or anything. Just basic, solder two points and flash with X2 4983 Bios.

The machine I have a problem with is a v1.1 xbox and am trying to flash with 007AUF raincoat .7
I telnet and all goes well, I backup the original bios with no problem using

./raincoat -r orig_bios.bin

Detects HYNIX HY29F080 and backs up bios. I was always under the impression that if the backup worked fine then both points were connected fine??

But then when I went to flash with the X2 4983 BIOS (as I've done countles times on other machines) I get this error below and the machine now frags after re-starting itself 3 times.

Starting at address 0x000000...
 Erasing...
  ERASE ERROR AT   +0x0...read  0x48
  Done
Error: Erase failed for block at +0x0, reads as  0x4C
    Could your chip be write-protected?
Completed

Any help would be appreciated, I understand I may need to get a mod chip for this. If so whats the best solderless one, easy to fit. I don't fancy soldering loads of wires, this machine has bad karma for me now.

Have you also updated your raincoat.conf file?  I have just had a look at mine, and the flash code for the HYNIX HY29F080 is a completly different ID code to the one your getting...
CODE
Flash = 0xadd5,"Hynix HY29F080",0x100000

So does your xbox still boot now?  It looks like it didn't erase at all.

Are you sure the wires are secure?

Cheers for the reply's but the machine does frag ( starts 3 times and then shows red/green).

I did recheck the solder on one of the points and it did seem to be showing a lot of resistance, buzzed ok but very low. It does look like it started to erase though as it frags and it worked fine before with the points soldered.

I think a chip might be the simple option as I can't see any other way to re-flash it.

Yes I'm using the latest config file for raincoat, has the same entry as you posted, but that simply tells raincoat where the base address is.

There are no wires this is a simple two jumper mod.

Thanks for the help so far.

Well you could install a lpc mod like an aladdin advance and only boot from that. Or you could try the three wire trick.

Yeah as its a 1.1 you should be able to do the three wire trick.  Attach a wire to 5v, A18 & A19 long enough so they pop out of the side of the xbox.  Twist them together, boot the xbox, then untwist (or cut) and try flashing again.  Using the 5v should boot the top section of your TSOP, and should get you running again.

Oh and obviously make sure the wires don't touch anything else while your doing this!

you could also use the lpc mod to flash the tsop

Unfortunately, he can't do that.  That method requires a working TSOP.  Try the three wire trick, if that doesn't work, then its either leaving an LPC mod in there, or a 29 wire mod.

Cheers guy's, didn't know if the 3 wire trick would work as it wasn't a 512k flash. I  read that the 3 wire trick boots the first part of the rom if you've used a smaller bin file. I din't get that far, it started erasing and then failed??? I will give it a go, could save me £50.

If not then will the excuter 2.6 work ok?

Thankyou all for your help and advice,

Yeah an xecuter 2.6 (or any LPC) will work, as long as there is some good code left on your tsop.

OK thanks to terrorvis, I managed to get the box running again BUT......

Once booted I thought I re flash the bios to get it booting all the time. Oh I got the same error as earlier but read 5c not 4c??? Thought I'd give it one more try for luck, started erasing completed OK. Started writing error failed. Tryed again and all I get now is check the jumpers settings ect..
I know that the bios was earased completely so I can't boot from any banks now. I have ordered another board but just wanted people to know that the 3 wire trick worked so thanks.
I have no idea why this one machine would not flash corectly. Both jumpers were perfect, tested by a couple of pro's as a good clean connection???

Thanks again all, I have learned more about TSOPing.

Got a link for that 3wire repair trick? I can't seem to find it.
