Help! Tsop Flashed Xbox Red/green Blink Of Death
« on: September 28, 2004, 07:10:00 PM »

I have a v1.0 Xbox with Hyundai BIOS HY29F080T-90.  I attempted a TSOP flash on it today, but unfortunately the machine seems to be fubar'd.

I've been following along this tutorial:

http://motherboardfaqs.com/content.php?content.64

Basically, I:

- soldered the 2 points as described in the tutorial
- used the MechAssault exploit to get the Xbox to boot Emergency Linux
- used raincoat to back up my BIOS (raincoat -r backupbios.bin)
- downloaded Xecuter 4983 BIOS and used XBTool to resize it to 1MB
- uploaded the resized BIOS to the xbox
- used raincoat to program the BIOS with the newly-uploaded 4983 BIOS:

DETECTED: Hynix - HY29F080 (1024k)
Programming with 4983bios.bin...  Read 1044804 byes from file
  Erasing...
   Done
  Programming...
   Done
  Verifying...
   Done
Completed

After this, I restarted the Xbox... there is never any video that shows up.  There is a real faint, whiny beep (kind of sounds like a POST beep on a dying battery), then the speakers pop.  The process (beep, pop) repeats once more, then the light begins blinking Green/Red alternating.

1) Is this officially a paperweight?

2) Is there some way I can fix the machine without buying a mod chip?

3) Would a mod chip even fix it?

4) What did I do wrong?

Please go easy on me... this is my first (last? ;-) ) TSOP flash...

Thanks in advance.

Look up the 3 wire trick and try that.

i thought the 4983 was encrypted and xbtool wouldn't read it properly ...

can you boot to play mechassault (probably not eh?)

1.) hopefully not a paperweight ... the 3 wire trick might work if you can't boot to a game (even try a copy of slayer's etc ... although if you don't get the flubber, you're probably not going to boot)

2.) might be a slight chance ...

3.) a mod chip would work no prob

4.) i can only think of the 4983, unless i'm mistaken  ...

4983 cant be edited but it can be resized. (1meg tsop is just a 256k bios 4 times in a row)

The 3 wire trick didn't work...  Basically the same behavior... it ultimatley ends up at the R/G Blink of Death.  I'm assuming my Xbox is now worthless until I get a mod chip for it, correct?

So I guess that leaves me with 2 burning questions:

1)  Mainly, I'm just looking to be able to stream music / video from my PC to my Xbox (to take advantage of the sound system it's hooked up to).  I know this is mainly dashboard stuff, but what's a decent mod chip to get, now that I've fried the onboard BIOS?

2)  Any guesses as to what went wrong with this flash?

Thanks

any old LPC modchip will do just to boot the xbox, aladdins are probably the cheapest

but to fix the TSOP youll need a 29-wire chip (not needed if you dont care about Live or having to leave the chip in)

most liekly you had a corrupt bios, you could have downlaoded a bad image (why i always use xbins) or it could have gotten corrupted when unpakcing, resizing, FTPing, or any other of about a dozen steps along the way

This is actually a spare XBox, not really concerned with using Live.
I can just buy a "standard" chip & leave it in then?

I downloaded the image from BitTorrent... maybe that was the problem.  Perhaps Windows didn't use binary transfer mode when I FTP'd it up to the Xbox.

Do you know of a technique to verify the validity of the TSOP image file before flashing (ie, right before running raincoat)?

Thanks again for all of the help.

if you get the image from a reputable source (xbins again) it will include an md5 hash which you cna check with xbtool, make sure they match up

Will any retail xbox games start from
power up? (Game in tray, then power on)

Hope this works, or you need the 29 wire experience
or a mod chip (Both are cheap)

If so, it may be flashed alright, but the Dash is not
happening.

I was able to save a few I flashed before discovering
XBTool to find out the boot dashes were all wrong.

xboxdash.xbe has to be at least one of the boot dashes
and spelled right in all "places"

Basically I think that is what most fragging is, a messed up dash
after a flash (The ugly red and green crap)

Try the switches again for the v 1.0's, they are great, and try to boot from
banks 2,3 or 4, it should work.

Hopfully you flashed a 4x256k and this works and you will get that nice
warm feeling inside when it boots.

My xbox gang learned this, and most everything, from Lordvader129
and would like to take this opportunity to thank him again for his patience
and saving many of our xbox's, sir you are a Godsend.

OK, so I bought a new Xecuter3 chip, installed it as per the instructions.... 2 weird sounding beeps, then the red/green flash of death again.  I didn't disconnect the 3 wire setup I tried before...  Any ideas why this wouldn't be working?  Should I disconnect the 3 wires?

Yes try disconnecting those wires or just make sure they arent in contact with each other.   If that doesn't work, take some pics and email em to me and I'll tell you whats wrong.

No love after the 3 wire disconnect...

(IMG:http://euro2k4.wmis.net/IMG_1324.JPG)

What configuration should the DIP switches be in?  Currently they're all to the left (I've tried putting each one to the right individually... no luck)

The Xbox is behaving exactly as it was after the botched TSOP flash.  It almost seems like it's still trying to boot from that bad flash still....

Ideas??

Take a close up of the lpc points and the d0 (without the tape).  The install looks good but I want to see the d0 especially close up and the surrounding points.

Here they are...

I know the LPC harness looks pretty messy... it was the one part of the install I let my roommate do.  I swear he had a soldering iron in one hand and a crackpipe in the other when he did it.  Regardless, the pins are all level, and they seem aligned correctly in the holes to the extent they would carry a current.  This is a v1.0 board so we had to remove the solder from the holes before we set the LPC harness in.  It wouldn't go in so my roommate did.. well.. what you see in the picture.

What configuration should the DIP switches on the external switch be in?

Make sure that the d0 isnt touching the points next to it.  All I can tell you is to check your points with a multimeter and check the d0 for continuity.  You can get the voltages here:
