if you can here the drive trying to eject then poss you have a loose or broken drive belt that controlls the open close opperation.

Power the xbox down and inset a straightend paperclip in the emergency eject hole for the drive. if the tray seems to come out easy with little resistance then the the drive belt sound like it has busted.

If the tray comes out and feels like it has a reasonable resistance. leave the drawer open and power up the xbox. the tray should close

It sounds like the drive is not sending the ready-open-close information to the xbox so the xbox does not know what state the drive is sitting at. Have you checked the yellow cable on the back of the dvdrom drive and the connection to the xbox main board. If not do as Muntzster suggests. check them it may be a simple fix for you smile.gif . I would gently remove and re-insert each end of the yellow cable before i tried anything else.

If all that fails then it looks as if the drive is failing after the initial check at boot up time when it gets checked by the hardware check routine (initial hardware check ok = boot. initial hardware check fail = error + error code) In your case the system boots so i suggest you replace the drive or borrow one to try so you can eliminate or identify a faulty drive

there is only one belt inside the dvdrom and as cconn0120 says with the tray manually ejected with the power off the drawer will close as it is supposed to when the xbox powers up so the drive belt is working as it should.

dvd drives are always kicking about on ebay some at reasonable prices. some at stupid prices but both options seem to be cheaper than retail shops and online breakers/sales shops

before you buy a replacement i would try to borrow a drive first. If a known working drive still has the same fault then you will know the fault lies somewhere else and you ain`t wasted any money on a drive you do not need
