The Pencil Lead Method... Didn't Work.
« on: June 03, 2004, 10:17:00 AM »

OK, i have a v1.0 xbox, i was very doubtful of the pencil lead method of flashing the TSOP, so i thought i'd try it just to prove to myself. Took me about 30 mins to get the damn power connector out, but i connected the write points with a LOT of pencil lead, boot up into raincoat 0.7 with my ST's like in the conf and what do i see?

INVALID MANUFACTURER ID: 0x09
Check that your flash-enable points are correctly soldered, that the
neighbouring circuitry is not damaged, and that any A18 or A19 switches
are correctly set.

If anyone HAS successfully done a TSOP flash with pencil lead reply here...  <

i seriously doubt the pencil lead trick woudl work, it doesnt give enough continuity, i wouldnt trust it anywya, if it brushed in the middle of flashing youd screw yoursel yourally, just get a conductive ink pen, those work ok  <

Lead is a HORRIBLE idea, your just gonna ruin the point of a TSOP flash and cause yourself to have to buy a modchip more likely than having it work. :\ Conductive ink would work, or just solder the points. It's really easy. I have no previous soldering experience, and with this sites tut's, I have flashed 3 TSOP's with no problems at all.  <

Yeah i was partly making this thread to put people off the idea, if it doesn't work at all now then god knows what it could do during a flash...  <

if you can remove it then go ahead, you'll know if it worked or not because you will get invalid man. id...  <

hell I've heared of people using tinfoil..... just cuz it works doesn't mean it's a good idea though. same as the pencil lead thing.

Id soonder have something that I know will stay in place while flashing.

that's why I either use solder to permanently open write access or wires and a switch to have enable/disable  <

Yeah this is an expensive toy to be just trying new things, I personally don't want a doorstop. And if you want to protect it from being flashed? Remove the option from your evox.ini  <

I tried something similar to that, i think the reason it didn't work was because i didn't clean the pencil lead off enough - i cut off a tiny bit of the metal from the connectors to a diode and taped a small piece down over both sets of TSOP points (back and front) still got invalid manufacture ID. Could it be possible there was "too much" of a connection because the wire was pretty thick (about 1/2 the thickness of one of the points)... It wasn't touching anything else though.  <

Get one of those "Windoe Defogger repair kits" for cars...those are meant to actually handle some power.   <
