Does Your Xbox Have 128mb Ram?
« Reply #30 on: March 22, 2004, 06:45:00 AM »

ohmy.gif I don't like the look of that tutorial!! It's the "Drowning the chip in solder" pic that puts me off!!
I'd try it with a hot air blower but drowning the chip in solder goes against my logic to soldering. I just couldn't do that!!
Brings back painfull memories of "ps2 expert install" shorts!! (and that was just 2 pins! or 3 depending on how bad my hands shook hehe)

If there was a big gain to game play, i'd get a blower and try this. Until there is... i'll leave it to the true experts!!

I am not sure if my tutorial video is on a server anywhere anymore, but watch it.  Doesn't use the drowning in solder method...I didn't like the looks of that either.

I still have them up on mine... links for these are as follows:
Install Video
Removal Video

these are by KingViper and compressed, mac users use VLC from videolan.org to play them, windows users can just use windows MP.

You are supposed to use solder paste and a special heat gun for SMD work like RAM but individual soldering can work. I guess heat would also be something to consider.

I have read that the extra RAM is good for XBMC. In what way?

Thanks wink.gif

I think everyone is over-estimating the fragility of these chips...

On my first memory upgrade attempt, I used a 45watt soldering iron to remove and install the RAM chips. Even after removing and installing them three times, nothing was damaged.

The RAM upgrade makes everything run smoother; The extra memory allows you to run XBMC/XBMP at a higher resolution (720p, 1080i) and still maintain the smoothness of the video playback.

Special heat gun, you mean a Hot Air SMT Reworking station... and I've got one which I use for upgrades. Waste of money? Sure in the same respect a gaming system of any type is a waste of money. The extra RAM is not needed but it sure is nice to have in the same respect that none of us really NEED our gaming systems but they sure are nice to have.

No I wasn't thinking about the real thing Aaron but a specialised heat gun that focuses the heat through a 1.0mm hole. It can also suck up solder in one action as the end itself get to soldering temps. I had to borrow one from a friend, he used to use it for DVD chipping mods before reprogramming became a dealer thing or remote job.

No, but I would like it. I'd have to install a mod chip, of course, then install the prog that removes the 64 meg flag.

I took the easy way out but it looks so professional...

I contacted FRIENDTECH

Cost me 12.90 to ship them my board.

I payed a money order in the box with my MO
It was for 91.40

That covered the ram, install and return shipping (2 day shipping)

I sent it out at 3pm on tuesday. (im in NY they are in CA)
It got there around 10am wed.
They opened the package, tested, then installed the ram, then tested again.  Ram upgrade was a success.

They shipped back that day.

I received my upgradd MB + i got a Composite/svideo cable with built in digital out. and they added a heatsinc to my MCPX and i got SKINZ for my box (though im not gonna use them)

Heres the best part.. I paid for 2 day shipping..  I got it back in 1 day.

SO i shipped tuesday at around 3pm and it was back at my door (MR UPS GUY) and i signed for it around 11am or so Thursday.  IT's now Friday mornign and im typing this.

Works great so far.

And they gave me 90 days warranty for RAM ONLY.  If i fuck my Board up another way it's my fault.. but if the ram drops below 128 meg in 90 days they will fix it for FRee w/ free shipping.

tongue.gif )

I had upgraded my "old" mobo to 128MB RAM before getting the Dream-X, and honestly, the 64MB -> 128MB RAM seems to make a bigger difference than 733MHz -> 1.4GHz.

I don't have it done yet, I would like it done. But I don't got the balls to do it.
